Valiants Use Strong 4th Quarter to Down MSV

PURCHASE, N.Y. Manhattanville opened up their 2012 season with a win over the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins on Saturday afternoon by the score of 13-6 as the Valiants scored six times in the fourth quarter to propel themselves to the win. In the victory, Kevin Warnock picked up his first career victory as a head coach.

Leading the way for the Valiants was sophomore Brian D'Iorio who had four goals and an assist to start off his campaign. Junior Bill Motherway added a hat trick of his own, while sophomore Brendan Kuntz had two tallies himself to round out the Valiant multi-goal scorers.

The Valiants jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 49 seconds into the contest as Kuntz netted his first of the afternoon with sophomore Jeb Miller picking up the assist. A few minutes later D'Iorio notched his first of the contest with 11:07 to go in the first quarter. The Dolphins cut the lead in half with 3:21 to go, but in the final 30 seconds of the period Manhattanville got their two goal lead back as D'Iorio sent his second goal past Mount Saint Vincent goalie Kyle Kalibat.

Manhattanville got on the board quickly again in the second period scoring just seven seconds after the opening faceoff as freshman Corey Steimel scored his first career goal with D'Iorio picking up his third point of the game with the assist. D'Iorio added his fourth point of the game as he scored just under three minutes later to give Manhattanville a fairly comfortable 5-1 lead at the time.

After a non-releasable penalty was called against the Valiants, Mount Saint Vincent clawed their way back into the game scoring two straight with the extra attacker. Both teams went cold for the next nine minutes before the Dolphins scored their third straight to pull within one on another man-up chance. The Valiants took their one goal lead into the halftime break.

After the intermission the two offenses went stagnant as the snow began to fall in Purchase keeping the teams' offenses at bay. Manhattanville scored twice in the third frame getting goals from Motherway and also D'Iorio's fourth, sandwiched between was a goal by the Dolphins' Dan Cohen, which allowed the Valiants took their 7-5 lead into the final 15 minutes.

In the fourth the offense began to fire on all cylinders as Motherway picked up his second of the half just 47 seconds into the quarter, and five seconds later Miller sent his shot past Kalibat to put Manhattanville up 9-5. The Valiants got four more consecutive goals as Motherway added his third, Kuntz his second and the first goals of the season from junior Will Sahakian and freshman Tom Tarczali with 1:18 to go.

With one second left on the clock a turnover in the defensive zone allowed the Dolphins to get one more goal, but it turned out to be too little too late as the Valiants came away with the 13-6 victory over Mount Saint Vincent. In goal junior Dom Poletto picked up his first win of the season making 17 saves along the way, while on the losing effort was Kalibat who made 13 of his own.

Leading the way in terms of ground balls was Miller who had seven for Manhattanville while freshman Connor Castleman scooped up six in time off the bench. Bruce Pappas led the Dolphins with nine ground balls, while also leading his team offensively with two goals and three points.

Manhattanville (1-0) will next be in action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Rensselaer, N.Y. on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. to take on nationally ranked RPI who defeated Montclair State in their season opener by the score of 10-4 earlier in the day. Mount Saint Vincent (0-1) will open up their home slate next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. when they welcome in the Fighting Tigers of Cobleskill.
