Ohio Wesleyan Breezes by Concordia-Wisconsin

Junior midfielder Drew Scharf (Redding, Conn./Barlow) had a goal and 2 assists to highlight a 6-0 first-quarter run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a non-conference win over Concordia on Saturday at Selby Stadium.

The Bishops took the lead when Scharf found freshman attacker Tommy Minkler (Oakton, Va./Landon School) for a score at the 12:09 mark, then got goals from senior midfielder David Walter (Glen Ridge, N.J.) and junior attacker Colin Short (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) less than a minute apart.

Freshman attacker Edwin Foster (Medfield, Mass./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) added a score just over a minute later, and goals by Scharf and senior attacker A.J. Pellis (Edmonton, Alberta/St. Francis Xavier) made it 6-0 after the first quarter.

The Falcons got on the scoreboard with a man-up goal by Derek Brueske midway through the second period, but that would be it for Concordia during the first half, as Ohio Wesleyan closed out the quarter with goals from junior midfielder Pat Bassett (Naperville, Ill./North) and Short to take an 8-1 lead at the half.

Scharf and sophomore midfielder Spencer Schnell (Dublin/Jerome) opened the third quarter with scores to push the margin to 10-1.

Concordia had a chance to get back into the game late in the quarter when Danny Dahms scored and Ohio Wesleyan was called for a penalty on the play, giving the Falcons a man-up situation, but junior midfielder Chris Ostrowski (Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) won the ensuing face-off and found Bassett for a man-down goal just 9 seconds later.

Scharf had 2 goals and 4 assists, Short and Minkler compiled 2 goals and 3 assists apiece, Schnell had 3 goals and an assist, and Bassett finished with 3 goals.

Freshman Ryan McMahon (Springfield, Va./The Bullis School) posted 5 saves, while junior Stephen Ford (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) had 1 save during the fourth quarter.

Brueske led Concordia with 2 goals and an assist. Zack Davis had 14 saves in the Falcon crease.
