Frostburg Edges Past Washington & Jefferson

FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State captured its second win of the season with a narrow 8-6 victory over Washington & Jefferson, Wednesday. The non-league win pushed the Bobcats overall record to 2-1, while the Presidents fall to 0-2.

The offensive output came from a host of Bobcats as eight different players scored a goal and a total of 10 players registered at least one point. Freshmen Chris Rios (one goal; two assists) and Devin Colegrove (one goal; one assist) were the only two players to record multiple points.

The Bobcats methodically used the entire first quarter to build a 3-0 lead and held a decisive 14-2 lead in shots. Rios opened action with a goal at 11:48 followed by a score from fellow freshman Greg Bourne at 10:26 for a quick 2-0 edge. The Bobcats continued their offensive pressure for the rest of the quarter until sophomore Ricky Kneebone scored with 26 seconds left to hand the hosts a 3-0 cushion.

After nearly 12 minutes ticked off the clock in the second quarter, the two teams combined for three goals in the final three minutes of the first half. Washington & Jefferson broke onto the scoreboard with just over three minutes left to pull to within 3-1.

FSU quickly answered when freshman Paul Newman scored 28 seconds later to increase the lead to 4-1. W&J closed out the half with a score with just 1:26 to play.

The Presidents continued to cut into their deficit as they opened the second half with a goal under two minutes into action and trailed just 4-3.

Leading by just one, FSU sophomore Andy Luhmann stopped the short W&J run and provided some breathing room with an unassisted tally with 6:45 showing on the clock. Colegrove pushed the lead to three (6-3) with a score at 4:22.

The Presidents scored a man-up goal with 2:52 left to draw the deficit to within two, 6-4, as the game headed for the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Britton Hoover opened the final stanza by pushing the lead back to three for FSU. With just 54 seconds gone in the fourth, Hoover scored his first of the season off a feed from Rios for a 7-4 lead.

The game, which had a steady rain from the opening whistle to the final horn, had a 30-minute relay due to lightning with 12:38 showing in the final quarter. W&J used the break to its advantage, scoring two goals following the delay and pulling to within one, 7-6, with just 6:55 to play.

The game remained close until FSU senior Dan Dowd scored with 2:58 remaining to provide a cushion for the hosts and ultimately their second win of the season.

For the game, the Bobcats owned a 47-20 advantage in shots and were a perfect 13 of 13 on clear attempts. The Bobcats also scooped up 46 groundballs. Sophomore Tyler Haines picked up the win in the cage, recording eight saves.

The Bobcats hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Neumann on Saturday at 1:00 pm.

FROSTBURG, Md. Dan Dowd scored with 2:58 remaining to become the eighth Bobcat goal scorer and help clinch Frostburg State's 8-6 men's lacrosse win over Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

The Bobcats (2-1) held commanding statistical advantages in shots (47-20) and ground balls (46-21), but W&J junior goalie Ran Kirby (Cleveland, Ohio/University School) kept the Presidents (0-2) in the match by totaling 11 saves.

The game was delayed for 30 minutes by lightning early in the fourth quarter with FSU leading by a 7-4 margin.

Frostburg State started quickly with a three-goal first quarter. Chris Rios and Greg Bourne scored 82 seconds apart during the first five minutes and Ricky Kneebone tallied a goal in the final minute for a 3-0 advantage.
