Crusaders Drop Home Opener to Muhlenberg

SELINSGROVE, Pa. Senior Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison) recorded a hat-trick but this wasn't enough as Susquehanna's men's lacrosse fell to Muhlenberg, 9-7, in non-conference action Wednesday evening.

Delevan got the Crusaders (0-2) on the board in the early going, scoring off a Marcus Cheatham (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola) feed to put SU up 1-0 at 10:44 in the first quarter.

Billy Spack (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) fired in a man-up goal with help from Delevan to put the Crusaders up 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Tim Pastore (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) scored 51 seconds into the second quarter before the Mules (2-1) rattled off three unanswered goals to take the lead at halftime 4-3.

Muhlenberg scored twice in the third quarter to go ahead 6-3 before Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison) and Delevan both fired in unassisted goals to trim the deficit to 6-5.

The Mules responded by tallying a man-up goal of their own with only 30 ticks left in the third to go ahead 7-5.

Lein scored directly off a faceoff won by Carmen Raroha (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace) only six seconds into the final quarter to cut the lead to 7-6.

Delavan got his third goal of the contest from a Lein pass to again trail only by one goal, 8-7. But with 5:17 left in the game, the Mules got on the board and held on for the victory.

Muhlenberg outshot SU 42-40 and won 12 of 20 faceoff opportunities. The Crusaders committed seven penalties but scored two man-up goals on three chances.

Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) stopped nine shots in goal for SU.

The Orange and Maroon are back home on Saturday, March 3 for a non-conference game against King's (Pa.) at 1:00 p.m.
