George Washington Knocks off George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior Megan Seidman scored a season-high four goals and six points as George Washington defeated local rival George Mason, 11-6, on Wednesday at George Mason Stadium.

The Colonials improve to 3-1, matching the 2005 squad for the best four-game start in program history.

The first nine minutes saw a flurry of scoring, as the teams combined for six goals by the 21:07 mark. Sophomore Lindsay DiAntonio put GW on the board less than two minutes in, and the Colonials scored three of the game's first four goals before the Patriots tied it up with back-to-back tallies.

Neither team found the back of the net again for nearly seven minutes, but senior Sarah Phillips' unassisted goal at the 14:17 mark sparked a 6-0 GW run to end the half. Seidman scored twice and had two assists during the spurt, and her second goal was the 100th of her career. She is just the third Colonial ever to reach the milestone. GW led, 9-3, at the break.

The Patriots (1-3) scored twice in the first 80 seconds of the second stanza, and Mary Schwartz' second goal of the period made it a 9-6 game with 22:14 to play. But that was as close as the hosts would get, as the GW defense held them off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, limiting them to just four shots.

Meanwhile, Seidman tallied twice more to provide all the insurance the Colonials would need.

Seidman's four goals came on just five shots, and she added two assists for six points, while Phillips recorded four points on a goal and three helpers to go along with three caused turnovers. Freshman Rachel Mia and senior Casey Disharoon also scored twice for GW, and Disharoon added three ground balls and three draw controls.

George Mason midfielder Allie Hilderbrandt led the Patriots with five points on three goals and two assists.

Junior goalie Jess Hicks recorded a career-high seven saves, while Mason keeper Brittany Pastrana stopped eight shots. The Colonials outshot the Patriots, 22-16.

The Colonials return to action on Saturday, when they visit Bucknell at 1:00 p.m.
