Marywood Defeats Knights in Season Opener

Scranton, PA Taylor McKeown recorded a game-high seven points and Sarah Caughy added five points to lead Marywood University to an 18-14 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in Wednesday nights season-opening, non-conference women's lacrosse game. The Pacers, who got hat-tricks from four different players including McKeown, will take a 1-0 record into their Spring Break trip which begins Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan College.

Marywood held a 3-1 lead after just 58 seconds of play behind a goal by Diana D'Achille and two from McKeown. Ellen Cashin cut the Pacers' lead to 3-2 at the 24:28 mark of the first half, but Marywood responded with a run of five-straight goals from five different players to lead 8-2 with 16:14 left in the opening half. McKeown, Kathy DiGiacomo, Kimberly Commisso, D'Achille, and Caughy all found the net during the burst.

Mount Saint Mary cut their deficit in half with back to back goals before Marywood restored their four-goal cushion with tallies from Commisso and Brooke Bondurant, but the Knights cut their deficit to 10-5 heading into halftime after scoring with 1:38 to play in the opening 30 minutes of play.

After the break, McKeown sandwiched a pair of markers around a goal by the Knights' Ela Igdeler to push Marywood's lead to 12-6 with 25:16 to play, but Mount Saint Mary rattled off four-straight goals to cut the hosts' advantage to 12-9 with 21:28 remaining. With momentum in favor of the visitors, Marywood responded with three straight goals to hold a 15-10 lead with 15:25 left on the clock.

After the Knights got a goal back, goals by Commisso and Bondurant stretched Marywood advantage to 17-11 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Mount Saint Mary used a three-goal spurt to cut their deficit to 17-14 with 3:09 left, but Bondurant iced the win by scoring unassisted with a minute and a half to play to complete the hat-trick in her first game in a Marywood uniform.

McKeown's seven points came on six goals and one assist while Caughy added five points on two goals and three assists. Bondurant, D'Achille, and Commisso each netted three goals apiece while DiGiacomo added a goal and two helpers as Marywood held a 45-23 advantage in shots for the game.

Leigha Dolcemascolo made five saves to pick up the win in goal for Marywood, who held a 27-24 edge in groundballs for the game and held a 23-11 advantage in draw controls, led by nine from D'Achille and eight for McKeown.

The Pacers forced the Knights to turn the ball over 22 times while losing it just 13 times themselves. D'Achille, Lauren Indelicato, and Ilze Spilde each recorded three caused turnovers to lead the squad while Stephanie Naro picked up a team-high six groundballs.

Lauren Beltrami took the loss for Mount Saint Mary despite making 19 saves. The Knights were led by Igdeler's four goal, two assist performance while Kaileen Spadaro added three tallies in the loss.

Marywood will head south for a two-game Spring Break trip that starts with a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. The Pacers will then take on Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
