Post Rally Falls Short Against Bridgeport

WATERBURY, Conn. Despite erasing a first half six-goal deficit, Post University fell to in-state rival Bridgeport in the season-opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at LaMoy Field. Freshman Miranda Polaski (Agawam, Mass.) led the Eagles with four goals.

Junior Morgan Kanavy (Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore Meghan Diggett (East Islip, N.Y.) scored three goals apiece in the loss. Senior goalkeeper Michelle Chadwick (Miami, Fla.) made 12 saves in the loss for Post (0-1). Gabrielle Valela of Bridgeport led all players with five goals.

After Bridgeport (1-0) scored the first five goals of the game in a span of 3:41, Polaski scored two of the next three goals to make the score 6-2 in favor of the Purple Knights. Post scored five of the final seven goals of the first half to cut the deficit to 10-7 at the intermission. During the stretch, senior Mallorie Michalak (Meriden, Conn.) scored a free position goal, while Kanavy found the back of the net twice. Diggett and Michalak capped the scoring for the Eagles in the first half.

With the score 11-7 in favor of Bridgeport, the Eagles scored five of the next six goals to level the score at 12-12 with 12:49 to play in the game. During the stretch, Polaski and Diggett scored two goals each, while Kanavy netted her third goal of the game with 16:19 remaining in regulation.

Bridgeport closed the game on a 4-1 run over the final 9:24 of the contest to secure the first victory in Purple Knights' women's lacrosse history.

Post was outshot 36-23 in the game, but held a 21-14 advantage in ground balls. Post was a perfect 13 for 13 in clear attempts.

The Eagles will return to the field on Friday, March 9, when they play host to the St. Joseph's (Conn.) Blue Jays. Opening draw at LaMoy Field is slated for 4:00 p.m.
