No. 13 Denison Starts Fast, Breezes by Albion

No. 13 Denison exploded for eight first quarter goals en route to a 20-2 victory over visiting Albion College on Friday night in Granville.

Thirteen different Denison players scored at least one goal in the rout and every able-bodied member of the Big Red squad received significant playing time.

Deinson attempted 53 shots on the night to the Britons' 17 shot attempts and of DU's 21 scoring tries in the first quarter, eight found the back of the net. In the first quarter Denison got two goals from first-year Will Koontz and a pair of scores from Nick Verklin. Cory Couture closed out the quarter with his 10th goal of the season. He also notched assists on goals by Alex Hardt and Eddie Vita.

Verklin, Hardt, Koontz, Ben Colberg, Zach Walsh, Matt King and Nick Caravana all scored two goals for the Big Red. Couture led all players with two assists.

In the face-off column, Denison dominated once again, winning 21 of 26 tries. Chip Phillips was 8 of 9, raising his season face-off percentage to .714. Teddy Powell led the team with five ground balls while first-year Ben Hearn added four.

Gregg Shannon led DU with three saves in 35 minutes while DU starter Nick Petracca posted one save in 25 minutes. Albion goalie Ian Monkman turned in 11 saves in 41 minutes off the bench.

Denison improves to 3-0 and will return to action next Saturday (March 10) with a key non-conference game against Haverford College. The Fords opened the season with losses against nationally-ranked Stevenson and Cabrini and will face St. Lawrence and Skidmore before taking on the Big Red next weekend. Albion falls to 2-2 on the year.
