Spartans Fly by Hawks to Hand Scardillo First Win

BRISTOL, R.I. Castleton State received a seven-point performance from freshman Kate Auer (South Glens Falls, N.Y.), and handed first-year head coach Mary Kate Scardillo a victory in her coaching debut, 19-11 over Roger Williams in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Bayside Field.

The Spartans opened the game with five-straight goals, and eventually stretched their lead to 9-3; before six unanswered goals brought the Hawks all the way back to tie the score at 9-9 ten minutes into the second half. The teams traded goals over the next five minutes, but it was Castleton that provided the final flurry, scoring eight unanswered to close out the game.

Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.) sparked the opening five-goal run, scoring with 19:08 remaining in the first half. The Spartans then received goals by Auer, Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.), and a pair by Blake Wardwell (Bridgewater, Vt.) to finish off the surge. The Hawks answered with goals by Kristen Pingree (Palenville, N.Y.) and Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn.) at the 8-minute mark. Deven Machette (Norwalk, Conn.) brought RWU to within 6-3 with six minutes to play, but Castleton ended the period with three straight scores to go into the break up by an 8-3 score.

Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) opened the second half with a score less than three minutes in for Castleton. On the following draw, Pingree put in a shot for the Hawks to kick-start a 6-0 run for RWU. Five different Hawks scored over the seven-minute stretch, capped off by a score by Dana Wilfahrt (Hamilton, Mass.) to tie the game at nine apiece.

After trading goals over the next five minutes Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) scored what proved to be the game-winner on a free position shot with 12:46 to play. Clark's goal ignited the final seven-goal rally, which saw four Spartans score including three from Clark and two from Auer.

Clark and Auer each finished with four goals for the Spartans, while Auer also contributed three assists. Mazzola added five points on three goals and two assists. Samantha Bonasera (Chelsea, Vt.) finished with four ground balls. Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, R.I.) earned the win, making nine saves in the game.

Pingree finished with four goals in her Hawk debut. Kelsey Rahilly (East Longmeadow, Mass.) added a pair of goals and an assist, while Machette tallied three points on a goal and two assists. Jessica Searl (Glastonbury, Conn.) notched three ground balls and four draw controls. Justine Sullivan (Norwell, Mass.) took the loss, stopping four shots on the day.

Roger Williams (0-1) hosts Wheaton College on Tuesday, while Castleton State (1-0) travels to Western Connecticut State next Saturday.
