Costabile Nets 7 as Dartmouth Tops Sacred Heart

HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth might have found a dynamic duo on Saturday in an 11-10 victory over Sacred Heart at Scully-Fahey Field. Junior Chris Costabile (Sykesville, Md.) and senior Drew Tunney (Greenwich, Conn.) combined for 10 goals and six assists for 16 total points.

Costabile was the finisher for the Big Green (2-0) with seven goals. Tunney added three goals and six assists for nine points. On six of Costabile's seven goals, Tunney made the pass that led to the goal.

The Big Green (2-0) pushed its lead to 10-7 with seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter on the seventh goal of Costabile and the sixth assist of Tunney. Tunney gave Dartmouth an 11-7 advantage two minutes later. The Pioneers (0-3) responded in the final five minutes scoring three goals. Sacred Heart cut the lead to one with 37 seconds remaining and won the ensuing faceoff. Unfortunately for the Pioneers as they attempted to tie they game, they committed a foul and turned the ball over to the Big Green. Dartmouth was able to run out the clock to earn the victory.

The seven goals by Costabile are the most by a Big Green player since Jamie Coffin '06 recorded seven against Providence. The all-time record for Dartmouth in one game is nine goals done four different times. The last time a player scored eight goals in a game was by Jeff Hickey '79 against Williams in 1979.

Tunney became the first to tally six assists since Ari Sussman '10 had six against Harvard on May 3, 2008. Tunney is the first to have nine points in a game since Josh Etzion '11 had nine against Wagner on March 11, 2010.

Dartmouth took 44 shots in the game compared to 33 for the Pioneers. Sacred Heart went 2 for 6 in man-up situations, while the Big Green went 0 for 4. Senior Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) made five saves for the Big Green, while Ryan Hughes stopped 12 shots for Sacred Heart.

At the end of first quarter, Dartmouth had a 4-2 advantage with three Big Green athletes scoring the goal. Tunney led the way with two goals, including the first two scores of the game for the team. Costabile added the team's third goal and freshman Brendan Rotanz (Westport, Conn.) tallied the fourth.

The second quarter saw Tunney and Costabile connect on three goals. The first came after Tunney passed to Costabile from behind the net. Costabile caught the pass on the right side of the cage, and fired a shot in the top left corner to give the team a 5-3 advantage with 10:24 remaining in the quarter. The Pioneers responded a minute later to cut the deficit to 5-4 with 9:31 left in the second. Sacred Heart tied the game with 6:55 left in the second when Matt Gannon made a nice pass behind the net to Chris Casey. Casey quickly redirected the ball past Campbell to tie the game.

The Tunney to Costabile connection struck again 40 seconds later to give Dartmouth a 6-5 advantage. With 1:30 left in the second, the duo scored once again with Tunney flipping the ball to Costabile who finished it to push the Dartmouth lead to 7-5. Neither team scored in the last minute and a half, with the Big Green holding a two-goal lead at halftime.

In the third the teams palyed almost eight minutes without either scoring. Costabile ended the drought with a behind the head flick that caught Hughes off guard for the score. Costabile added his sixth goal two minutes later on a pass from Tunney. The Pioneers added a goal a minute later, but Dartmouth went into the fourth quarter with a 9-6 lead.

It is the first time since 2006 that the Big Green won their first two games of the regular season. The team started 3-0 that year. Dartmouth next hosts Bellarmine on Tuesday, March 6, at 3:00 p.m.
