O'Gorman Powers Big Blue to Victory vs. Wheaton

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophmore midfielder Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) registered four goals and two assists to lead University of New England to a 9-4 triumph over Wheaton College (Mass.) in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.

O'Gorman added seven ground balls and won 8 of 10 face-offs for the Nor'easters (2-0), who out-shot their opponents by a 39-23 margin.

Junior Tyler Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.) totaled three points (2 goals, 1 assist) in support, as did older brother Dylan Thomas (1 goal, 2 assists).

After UNE led 2-1 after the first period, and notched the only score of the second, Big Blue gained its separation with the initial three markers of the third to go up 6-1. O'Gorman tallied the last two for the Nor'easters -- a mere seven seconds apart.

Senior goalie Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) stopped 11 shots and classmate Nick Peter (Queenstown, Md.) caused three turnovers to head the defensive effort. Junior Chris Garber (Cheshire, Conn.) also contributed to the face-off duties with three wins in five tries.

For Wheaton (0-1), senior Mike Harrington (Sturbridge, Mass.) turned in a pair of scores. Classmate David Schroeder grabbed a team-best six ground balls, and sophomore netminder Harrison Branhall (Barrington, R.I.) made 13 saves.

The Nor'easters hit the road for a date with the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.). The Lyons are back at it on Wednesday with a visit to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
