UNE Comes Back to Nip Wellesley on Goal at 0:44

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Junior Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.) tallied her only score of the game with 44 seconds left in regulation to lift the University of New England to a 15-14 come-from-behind win over Wellesley College in non-conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

After surrendering the first goal of the second half to face an 8-5 deficit, nine of the next 13 markers went for Big Blue to assume a 14-12 advantage inside the final seven minutes. First-year Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) recorded all of her team-high four goals in the first five of the stretch.

Seniors Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Jesalyn Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.), along with first-year Nikki Smith (Shapleigh, Maine), also found the back of the cage during the second-half run.

Nathalie Gruet got the Blue back within one at the 5:50 mark, and Claire Canty leveled the contest with 1:35 remaining to tie things at 14-all, before Cole picked up the rebound off a saved UNE shot and fired it into the net for the game-winner.

Newsome's five points (4 goals, 1 assist) on the day were matched by sophmore Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), who finished with three goals and a pair of assists. Junior Emily Lodge (Lyman, Maine) notched all three of her scores in the second portion of the opening stanza to keep the Nor'easters close.

Lodge and sophomore Gina Iannazzi (Methuen, Mass.) each secured five draw controls for UNE, which, with the support of an additional four from Tavella, held a 17-14 edge in the category.

Sophomore goalie Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) made 13 saves for the victory, including one in the final seconds to preserve the decision.

The triumph was just the second for Big Blue (2-0) in six all-time meetings with Wellesley (0-1).

For the hosts, Britt Mscisz recorded four goals while Gruet and Canty each added three. Gruet also finished the match with five caused turnovers. Wellesley out-shot its opponent, 39-29, in the contest.

Tori Hysko turned aside nine shots in goal for the Blue, who begin a six-game road trip with a date at Endicott College on Wednesday.

The Nor'easters return home for an outing against the University of Southern Maine the same day (4:00 p.m.).
