Denison Downs Sewanee to Avenge 2011 Loss

Denison avenged a 12-8 loss to Sewanee in 2011 with a 14-9 victory over the Tigers on Saturday morning in Danville, Ky.

Denison used a 6-1 run in the first half to take a 6-1 lead with 13:22 to play in the opening half. Sewanee would answer with a run of its own, scoring four of the next five goals, trimming Denison's lead to 7-5 at the intermission.

In the second half, with Sewanee trailing 10-7, Denison put the game away with goals from Alex Thurner, Molly Chapman, and Molly Sbrega. That lifted the Big Red to a six-goal lead with 10 minutes to play and it would be enough to move DU's record to 2-0 on the season.

Thurner paced the Big Red offense with four goals and two assists off only six shot attempts. She also had two draws on the day. Fellow senior Carly Tschantz scored two goals while adding three ground balls. Olivia Shiland ended with a hat-trick on her three shot attempts while tying Tschantz for the team-lead with three ground balls. Chapman and Sbrega rounded out the Denison scoring leaders with two goals apiece.

Hannah Minifie got the start in goal for the Big Red and she finished with six saves in her 60 minutes of action. Sewanee's Amy Nusbaum allowed 14 goals but posted 15 saves in the crease for the Tigers.

Sewanee was led by Meg Welton's four goals and four draws off five shot attempts. Denison returns to the same field in Danville, Ky. on Sunday when they take on Centre College at 11:00 a.m.
