Carmen Scores Five as Boxers Fell Loggers

FOREST GROVE Carmen Taplin (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) led the way in a big second half for Pacific Saturday, scoring three of her five goals in the final 15 minutes as the Boxers picked up their first win of the season with a 14-7 victory over Puget Sound in women's lacrosse action at Lincoln Park Stadium.

Taplin led a surge of six unanswered goals to close the game that allowed the Boxers (1-1) to pull away from an 8-7 lead over the final 12 minutes of the contest. She started the string with her free-position goal with 12:40 to go and Brittney Hartmann (Jr., Portland, Ore.) closed it out with her unassisted strike with 1:27 left.

Brooke Painter (Fr., Roseburg, Ore.) added three goals while six other Boxers sored one goal each. They led an effort that saw Pacific outshoot the Loggers 37-20. Pacific also held a 34-24 advantage in ground balls, but Puget Sound (0-2) took a 13-9 edge in draw controls.

Pacific opened the contest with two goals from Amy Mayhugh (Fr., Tigard, Ore.) and Taplin within the first two minutes. Painter made it a 3-1 Pacific lead with her first collegiate goal at the 15:29 mark before both teams traded goals back and forth for much of the rest of the half. Puget Sound's Caroline Cook tallied the last goal of the half with 1:39 left to bring the Loggers within 6-4 at the half.

Kristine Morris brought the Loggers within 6-5 with the first goal of the season half just a minute into the period. Once again, the two teams traded goals one for one until Taplin's strike with 12:40 to go started the Boxers' 6-0 closing run. Melanie Niehus (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Mikaila Way (Sr., Evergreen, Colo.) each added goals to the run for the victory.

Ali Loeb (So., Portland, Ore.) earned the victory in goal for the Boxers, making 14 saves. Linnea Bostrom took the loss for Puget Sound, making 18 saves.

Pacific will conclude a three-game home stand to open the 2012 season on Wednesday night, hosting Berry (Ga.) at 7:00 p.m. Puget Sound will host Berry on Friday.
