Fraser Starts Strong, Fades Against #6 Oregon

BURNABY, BC (March 3, 2012) With first half leads of 5-2 and 8-6, Simon Fraser would be unable to maintain the early momentum for a full 60:00 minutes, falling 20-13 to the visiting Oregon Ducks.

Trailing 10-8 at halftime, SFU would tie the game at 10-10 out of the break, before 7:00 minutes in Clan third quarter penalties fueled a seven-goal UO run to put the game out of reach despite the two teams matching each other goal for goal over the final frame.

Calvin Craig (Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) continued to lead Fraser in scoring with 4 points on 2 goals and 2 assists, while freshmen Sam Clare (Ladner, BC/Vancouver College) and Travis Hayes (Dublin, CA/Dublin High School) each registered hat tricks with three-goal efforts in the loss.

Chris Osip (Henderson, NV/Coronado High School) opened the scoring to put the Ducks up 1-0, until junior midfielder Eric Ransom (Sherwood Park, AB/Bev Facey High School) tied the game at 1-1, followed by Clare on the man-up to give SFU their first of three first-half leads at 2-1. Oregon freshman Michael Hoch (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge High School) pulled the teams back to even at 2-2.

An aggressive ride then began to build the Clan some momentum as Calvin Craig went to work, feeding Ward Spencer (Saskatoon, SK/Evan Hardy Collegiate) off of a caused turnover to put SFU back on top at 3-2, before scoring himself on the man-up and assisting on Clare's second of the game to push the Clan ahead by three at 5-2. The high intensity first quarter would see UO score twice more to end the frame, as goals by Osip and Sean Silverstein (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Oswego High School) saw the Ducks down 5-4 after 15:00 minutes.

Oregon continued their string of unanswered goals to start the second quarter as Jeff Garrett (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge High School) and Kyungjeen Paik (Portland, OR/Sunset High School) scored back to back to give the Ducks their first lead since the games' opening marker at 6-5.

A 1:00 minute personal prior to the UO goal would appear to continue to stall the Clan's momentum; however, a shorthanded tally by Sam Clare would prove to be just the spark that SFU needed, as Craig and Hayes made it three in a row to put Fraser back in front at 8-6. Oregon would continue to score in bunches, as the Ducks responded with another four-goal run to take a two-goal lead of 10-8 into the intermission.

Simon Fraser would come out strong out of the half, as goals by junior attack Colton Dow (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary) and sophomore LSM Riley Wanzer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak High School) drew the Clan even at 10-10. It would not take Oregon long to re-find their rhythm, as the Ducks answered back with two goals of their own before penalties continued to re-shift the momentum in UO's favor and began to put SFU in a hole.

Silverstein scored his second of the game with a two-man advantage, followed by Hoch and Osip at even strength to extend the Oregon lead to five at 15-10. Following a stick-check during a time-out, the Ducks would be assessed at 3:00 minute non-releasable penalty for an illegal stick. Looking to get back in the contest, Fraser would be unable to convert on the man-up, losing possession and giving up a goal short-handed on what negated a golden opportunity for the Clan.

Not responding well to the frustration, SFU would be assessed a 3:00 minute non-releasable penalty themselves for an illegal hit. Oregon would be quick to once again cash in on Fraser's mistakes, scoring their second man-up goal of the period to sit comfortably at 17-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
