Bayliss Leads Wingate to DSC Win at Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men's Lacrosse) First-year Florida Tech continued to show improvement despite losing 13-7 to fellow Deep South Conference foe Wingate Monday evening at Hustler Stadium.

The Panthers (0-6, 0-5 DSC) received two goals each from Andrew Conley and Christian Isola. Patrick Manning, Mike Marshner and Billy McClellan also found the back of the net. The Bulldogs improved to 3-2, 2-1 in league play with the win.

"Nineteen freshmen played a heck of a game tonight," head coach Ryan McAleavey said. "We want to win every game, but we also want to make sure we play better than we did in the previous game. We had a great defensive effort against Tampa, considering we gave up only nine goals on 59 shots. The defense played really tough, but our offense didn't play up to par.

"We had 14 shots against Tampa and today we had 33. We changed things up offensively, moved people around, changed up some formations and our offense responded. The best part about it is we got looks where we wanted them."

Conley looked to set the tone for the game, scoring the first goal 53 seconds into the contest. Even though the Bulldogs were short-handed, Derek Watt tied the game seven minutes later. Marshner found Manning to put the Panthers ahead once more with 5:20 to play, however, Wingate would score the next five goals to take a 6-2 lead.

FIT took advantage of three man-up opportunities with the last coming from McClellan with over seven minutes to play.

"All in all, I felt it was a very good team effort," McAleavey added. "Not just on the field, but morale wise. The kids feel good about themselves moving forward. They're excited about practice tomorrow because they want to get better. Physically, we don't match up against teams, but they're giving me their 100 percent effort."

The first ranked opponent will travel to Hustler Stadium on Thursday as No. 10 Catawba will square off against the Panthers at 7:00 p.m. Live audio and stats will be available at FloridaTechSports.com.
