Simon Fraser Regains Bite, Handles Gators

SEATTLE, WA (March 5, 2012) Playing their second game in as many days, Simon Fraser would fend off any signs of fatigue versus Florida, leading for most of the contest before pouring it on in the fourth quarter to claim a 15-9 victory.

Junior Colton Dow (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary) led the Clan with a season-high 6 points on 5 goals and 1 assist, while fellow attackman Calvin Craig (Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) chipped-in with 3 goals and 2 assists to extend his team-leading point total to 29 on the season.

Seven different players recorded multi-point efforts for SFU, including freshman midfielder Sam Clare (Ladner, BC/Vancouver College) who continued his strong play with 2 goals and 1 assist. Sophomore goaltender Darren Zwack (Sherwood Park, Alberta/Archbishop Jordan High School) also had an outstanding game making 21 saves and posting a .700 save percentage for the win. The out of conference match-up was played neutral site at University of Washington.

Clare opened the scoring early in the first quarter to put SFU up 1-0 before Florida midfielder Justin Lucas (Jacksonville, FL/Nease High School) scored consecutively to give the Gators their only lead of the contest at 2-1. Craig scored his first of the game short-handed to tie the game back up at 2-2 before Dow continued to find his scoring touch on a pass from midfielder Eric Ransom (Sherwood Park, AB/Bev Facey High School) to give the Clan a 3-2 lead after 15:00 minutes.

Heading into the second quarter, Craig and Dow would connect to put Fraser ahead 4-2. Justin Lucas would then continue to have the hot hand for Florida, putting the Gators on his back to close the gap to 4-3 before scoring his fourth of the game, following a marker by Clan midfielder Frank Davalos (Moose Jaw, SK/Albert E. Peacock Collegiate), to keep UF down by one at 5-4. Florida attackman William Buch (Orlando, FL/Boone High School) would close out the first half scoring to bring the two teams back to even and knot the score at 5-5 heading into the break.

Fraser would get back out in front following the intermission, with Ransom reclaiming the Clan lead at 6-5. Gator midfielder Tyler Letson (Winter Springs, FL/Winter Springs High School) would then tie the game at 6-6, until goals by Dow on the man-up and an even strength tally by freshman attack Iain Vickars (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby South Secondary) put SFU out in front the rest of the way at 8-6.

Despite the deficit, Florida would briefly regain some momentum to end the third quarter, killing off a 3:00 minute non-releasable stick penalty, followed by a goal from UF attackman CJ Casselli (Tampa, FL/H.B. Plant) with a 2-man advantage to close the gap to one down the stretch.

The fourth quarter would be all SFU, as the Clan took their largest lead of the day at 10-7 on goals from Craig and Dow. Buch would score his second of the contest to pull the Gators back to within two, before a shorthanded goal from Fraser defender Mitch Frank (Burnaby, BC/St. Thomas More Collegiate) kick started a 5-goal SFU run to extend the Clan lead and reset the score to 15-8. Florida would score once more before time expired but a 7-2 fourth quarter would put an exclamation mark on what saw the Clan outscore the Gators 10-4 over the final two periods on route to the 15-9 win.

The victory marks SFU's first out of conference win of 2012 after previously dropping games to current No. 1 Colorado State (11-4) and No. 3 Brigham Young (14-10) to open the season. The Clan will now have a bye week before facing their fourth out of conference and fifth ranked opponent of the season when they square off versus No. 17 Illinois in another neutral site contest to be played at Salem Academy in Salem, Oregon on March 17.

After starting their trip to the Pacific Northwest with a win over Washington (10-7) on March 2, Florida will now have two days off as they continue south to wrap up their trip with a game against Oregon in Eugene on March 7.
