Dominican Drops Opener to St. Thomas Aquinas

Hillburn, NY (3/7/12) -- Dominican College opened up the 2012 season with a non-conference road loss to St. Thomas Aquinas, 13-6, this afternoon in a game played at the Torne Valley Sports Complex. With the loss, Dominican falls to 0-1 on the year, while St. Thomas Aquinas College improves to 1-0.

The Spartans opened the contest with five unanswered goals to take a 5-0 lead with 13:17 to go in the first half. Freshman attacker Allison Smithwick (Commack, NY) got the Lady Chargers on the scoreboard with her first two collegiate goals, one off an assist from Brianna Blank (Point Pleasant, NJ) and one off a free position shot to cut the deficit to 5-2. Junior midfielder Elizabeth Schmidt (Montgomery, NY) netted her first goal of the year with 4:18 to to make the score 5-3.

A STAC goal made the score 6-3 and freshman Lauren Arnone (Neptune City, NJ) closed out first half scoring with a free position and her first collegiate goal to make the score 6-4 at halftime.

Freshman Gina Sparaco (Freeport, NY) netted her first collegiate goal to start the scoring in the second half and bring Dominican within a goal, 6-5, with 22:45 left in the second half. St. Thomas Aquinas went on a 2-0 spurt to rebuild an 8-5 lead, but Schmidt broke up the scoring with her second goal of the contest with just under 16 minutes to play. The Spartans closed out the game as they began it with five consecutive goals for the 13-6 victory.

Veronica Iozzi (Chester, NJ) started the game in goal, giving up one goal in seven minutes, while freshman Dominique Labate (Bronx, NY) made four saves in 52:54 minutes in the net and allowed 12 goals. St. Thomas Aquinas College out-shot the Lady Chargers, 24-22.

Dominican is back in action on Friday when they host Lindenwood University in a non-conference game. Game time is set for 4:00 pm at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
