Washington & Jefferson Defeats Wooster for First Win

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson freshman attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor's Academy) rifled in five goals to help the Presidents knock off previously undefeated Wooster 18-11 in men's lacrosse non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.

The Presidents (1-3) earned their first victory in nine all-time meetings with Wooster (3-1).

The Fighting Scots controlled play early on and built a 3-1 lead five minutes in; however, W&J exploded for eight unanswered goals during a stretch of 17 minutes. Angell scored three times during the run, which put W&J ahead 9-3 midway through the second quarter, while senior attacker Andrew Wallick (Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) netted two goals and assisted on two others.

Wooster fought back with three-straight goals to close to within 9-6 at the 4:36 mark of the second period, but Angell and Wallick scored 1:09 apart to give W&J a five-goal cushion at halftime.

Patrick Schlick posted the first goal of the second half to bring the Fighting Scots to within 11-7, but goals from junior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho, Bishop Kelly) and senior attacker Mark Ringeling (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) pushed the lead back to 13-7 and Wooster would get no closer than five the rest of the way.

W&J outscored Wooster 7-3 during the pivotal second quarter, including a stretch of 3:48 which was highlighted by five Presidents' goals.

Angell added one assist for his first career six-point game, while Wallick also tallied six points with three goals and three assists. Ringeling notched four goals, while Eck produced three goals and two assists. Sophomore midfielder Casey Smallwood (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) collected his second-straight, two-goal game and junior midfielder John Zustra (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) scored once.

Junior midfielder Dylan Haas (Damascus, Md./Poolesville) dished out a game-high four assists, while also winning 11 of 19 faceoffs and collecting four ground balls. Junior defender Ryan Cronin (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and freshman midfielder Will Wagner (Riva, Md./South River) both picked up seven ground balls.

Freshman Connor Crowe (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) was the winning goalie after making four saves in a little over 20 minutes of action. He was in goal during the Presidents' second period scoring outburst. Classmate Nate Rattner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) played the final 35 minutes and finished with six saves. W&J outshot Wooster by a 34-29 margin.

Wooster was led by Matt Ranck's four goals and two assists.
