Royals Go Down to Defeat in Battle with Lions

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Queens University of Charlotte saw its first loss of the season this afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex in a game against Mars Hill College. The Royals fell 17-7 to the Lions who are now 7-0 on the year. Queens now sits at 3-1 in men's lacrosse action.

Derek Young led the Royals with two goals today, while five others notched a goal apiece. Patrick Murphy was excellent on the defensive end collecting seven caused turnovers and seven ground balls.

Cade Zulak and Taylor Thilo led the Lions' offense with seven points each. Both players scored three goals and dished out four assists. T.J. Cowx added six points with five goals and one assists. Ryan Herrmann won 19 of 23 face-offs and scooped up nine ground balls. Chris Cudmore tallied seven ground balls.

After scoring the first two goals of the game, Queens went cold as the Lions recorded three to close the first leading 3-2.

The Lions would put the first point on the board in the second before Patrick Thomas ended Queens' drought with a score at 12:37. Mars Hill then found the back of the net three times in a row going up 7-3. Queens' Justin Kestler and Evan Farkas would help Queens close the second on a 2-1 run allowing the Royals to head into the locker room trailing by three, 8-5. Zulak of the Lions notched three of his goals in the second period.

Young fired a ball into the net at 12:22 for Queens' only goal in the third. The Lions responded with five consecutive goals making the score 13-6 heading into the fourth.

Young would be the only Royal to notch a goal in the fourth as well as the Lions scored four more goals for the 17-7 victory.

The Royals outshot the Lions 36-32, while both teams collected 33 ground balls apiece. Dylan Price took the win in goal with 17 saves, while Andrew Hyland of Queens takes the loss after collecting seven saves.

The Royals will travel to face Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
