Florida Southern Rallies to Knock off Wingate

Lakeland, Fla.---Florida Southern outscored Wingate 6-1 in the fourth quarter, rallying for a 15-11 Deep South Conference victory Wednesday night at Bryant Stadium. The Mocs (2-4 overall, 2-2 DSC) trailed Wingate (3-3 overall, 2-2 DSC) 10-9 entering the final frame.

Four players had two or more goals for Florida Southern. Senior attack Mat Thompson (Akwesasne, Ontario) had four goals to lead the host Mocs. FSC freshman attack Dane Sorensen (Victoria, British Columbia) netted three goals and dished out a team-best two assists. The Mocs outshot the Bulldogs 26-7 in the second half, rebounding from a 9-6 halftime deficit.

Wingate junior attack Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led the visiting Bulldogs with three goals. Junior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.) had two goals, while junior midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) and sophomore midfield Troy Press (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) recorded two points each with one goal and one assist.

FSC sophomore midfield Dan Krispinsky (Fort Myers, Fla.) won 21 of 30 face-offs and collected four ground balls. Florida Southern had 37 ground balls, compared to 26 for Wingate. Mocs senior goalkeeper Andrew Almansberger (Orlando, Fla.) earned the victory with nine saves. He allowed 11 goals, but only two after intermission. Bulldog senior goalkeeper Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) also went the distance. He gave up 15 goals and recorded 12 saves. FSC outshot Wingate 41-27 Wednesday night.

Wingate plays game three of a four-contest road swing Saturday, visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University for a 2:00 p.m. DSC encounter. Florida Southern hosts Catawba Saturday (2:00 p.m.) in a re-match of the 2011 DSC tournament championship game.
