Chestnut Hill Takes the Venom out of Cobras

Lafayette Hill, PA (3/8/2012) Chestnut Hill collected its second straight non-conference win by more than a 10-goal margin today, as sophomore attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) and junior attack Craig Owen (Glenolden, PA) fueled the Griffins in a 16-6 victory over Coker. Both Griffins attackers totaled six points in a dominating team performance.

Coker (2-6) kept the contest interesting in the first half, only trailing #12 Chestnut Hill (3-1) by four at intermission, 8-4. The second half, however, was another story. The Griffins rattled off seven unanswered goals at the start of the period to lead the Cobras 15-4 with 12:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Cobras would outscore the Griffins 2-1 in the remaining time, but it was not enough to derail the final, 16-6.

Freshman midfielder Keith LaClair (Lindenhurst, NY) was the Cobras top performer, scoring four goals and recovering a ground ball. The other two tallies came from junior attack Steven Marciano (Shirley, NY) and sophomore midfielder Timothy Smith (Commack, NY). Smith also recovered seven ground balls and won 9 of 16 (.563) face offs, while Marciano and junior midfielder Alex Salepeitro (Setauket, NY) provided an assist each. In goal, freshman Tim Ryan (Glocetser, RI) made ten saves, grabbed a ground ball, and caused a turnover in the losing effort (2-6).

For the Griffins, Melnychenko totaled four goals and two assists, as Owen record his six points on three goals and three assists; Owen also fielded four ground balls and caused a turnover. Sophomore midfielder Mike Landau (Lancaster, PA) contributed four points with three goals and an assist while junior midfielder Mike Duddy (Toms River, NJ) offered a three-point performance with two goals and an assist in addition to a team-high, five ground balls.

Sophomore midfielder Sean Johnsen (Toms River, NJ) was the Griffins lead man in the face-off circle, winning 7 of 11 (.636) while recovering three ground balls. Junior defenseman Tom Carfagna (Laurys Station, PA) and junior goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA) led the Griffins defensively. Carfagna totaled three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Maurer made eight saves and recovered four ground balls while earning the win (3-1).
