Newberry Falls, as Converse Nets 12 Unanswered

NEWBERRY, S.C. - A two-goal performance by freshman Nikki Cowell and an early lead was not enough for Newberry as the visiting Converse Valkyries scored 12-straight goals on their way to a 17-4 victory over Newberry at Setzler Field.

Newberry (1-2) fell behind early as the Valkyries (2-2) opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game. Alyssa Savitz's tally was all the offense the two teams saw during the opening ten minutes of the game, before Newberry sophomore Olivia Lawnick (East Brunswick, N.J.) netted her fifth goal of the season.

Colwell (Greer, S.C.) added her first goal of the afternoon six minutes later giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead. The Wolves lead was short lived as Converse scored three straight to take a 4-2 lead. With five minutes remaining in the opening half, the Wolves added a third goal as freshman Meg Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.) netted her second goal of the season.

After 12-straight goals for Converse, the Wolves added a fourth and final goal as Cowell scored from on a free position opportunity for her team-high eighth goal of the season.

Newberry out controlled Converse off the draw 14-9, and freshman goalkeeper Sam Capers (Monroe Township, N.J.) led all backstops with 15 saves.

The Wolves return to Setzler Field on Tuesday when Shepherd University visits Newberry at 4:00 p.m.
