Montclair State Surges Late to Defeat Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. - Montclair State University put together a late spurt to defeat The University of Scranton, 15-12, in non-conference women's lacrosse action Thursday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

Freshman Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) scored all of her four goals in the final 18 minutes of play as the Red Hawks ended the game on a 7-4 run to improve to 2-1 on the season. Montclair St. also received four goals from senior midfielder Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) and two apiece from sophomore attacker Krissa Henderson (Landing, NJ/Roxbury), junior attacker Kailee Beal (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury), and sophomore midfielder Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls).

Scranton, which lost its first game of the season to fall to 2-1, was led by freshman midfielder Emily Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) with three goals and sophomore attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) and freshman midfielder Emily Mulligan (Sloatsburg, NY/Suffern) finished with two apiece.

The Royals also received a goal and two assists from senior attacker Kaela Mahon (Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ/Saint Rose), a goal and an assist from junior midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), and an a goal each from junior attackers Kaitlin Lazorko (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy), Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South), and Shannon Howe (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River).

Scranton built up early leads of 2-0 and 5-2 in the opening 16 minutes of the first half before the Red Hawks, behind two goals by Delfini and Schoneveld, answered with a 5-1 spurt to take a 6-5 lead en route to a 7-6 halftime lead.

The game was tied three times in the second half, the last of which came on an unassisted goal by Howe with 14:38 remaining. Henderson answered with a goal off a free-position shot and Beal countered with a goal off of the first of three assists by senior attacker Maggie Fallon (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) to give the Red Hawks the lead for good, 11-9.

Scranton cut the gap to one, 12-11, on a goal off of a free-position shot by Sullivan before Conlon scored twice in the final five minutes to change the momentum permanently in Montclair's favor.

The Red Hawks have now won all three games in the series with Scranton, but the last two have been decided by just five goals and their first win in the series' opener in 2010 was decided in overtime.

Junior goalie Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood) finished with 12 saves for Scranton while junior Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ/Roxbury) had six for the Red Hawks. The Royals will open a two-game Spring Break trip against Dickinson College on Tuesday, March 13, before taking on Denison University (Ohio) on Thursday, March 15.
