Offense Struggles in Privateer Loss to WestConn

DANBURY, Conn. (March 9, 2012) Maritime lost up at Western Connecticut Friday night at the Westside Athletic Complex by the score of 10-1. The loss drops the Privateers' record to 1-4 on the young season, while the Colonials improve to 1-1.

The game was very low scoring at first, as there was only one goal in the first half of play and that was by WestConn senior Ryan Gillis (Norwich, Conn.). The Colonials made it 2-0 early in the third quarter before sophomore Brennen Siele (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) tallied an unassisted goal to bring Maritime to within one.

Gillis scored again late in the third quarter, followed by a man-up goal by teammate Nick Foley (Walpole, Mass.) to put the home team ahead, 4-1 by the end of the quarter. In the fourth, it was all WestConn, as they tallied six more goals to claim the victory.

In goal for the Privateers, junior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) looked strong in the first half, stopping 13 of 14 shots. He finished the night with 21 saves in just over 55 minutes played and was replaced by freshman Tyler Donovan (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) in the closing minutes of the game, who recorded three saves.

Barbuto picked up a team-high six groundballs, while sophomore Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and senior Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) each registered three GBs, apiece.

For Western Connecticut, Gillis scored a game-high five goals, while sophomore Ryan Foster (Ledyard, Conn.) contributed with two goals and two assists. Starting goalie, senior Tyler Martone (Cheshire, Conn.) earned the victory with 10 saves in 55 minutes of action.

Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, March 14, when the squad travels to take on arch-rival Kings Point. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Mariners' Captain James Harvey Tomb Field.
