Adrian's Red-Hot Goalie Sends DU to First Loss

Adrian's Laura Finfrock posted 14 saves and Amanda Lambert added three goals and one assist as the visiting Bulldogs handed the Denison Big Red its first loss of the 2012 season, 11-9 from Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.

Despite outshooting Adrian 29-18 and forcing the visitors into 20 turnovers, Finfrock's performance in goal was the difference. With Denison trailing 5-3 with one minute remaining in the first half, Molly Sbrega and Alex Thurner scored in the final minute, tying the game at 5-5.

Early in the second half Denison's Kiersten Dussinger gave the Big Red its first lead since the 14 minute mark when she scored off an 8-meter attempt. That three-goal DU run would be stopped three minutes later by Adrian's Cassie Hoyez off an assist by Rachel Johnston that tied the game 6-6. That goal sparked a three-goal Adrian run that had the Bulldogs out in front 8-6 with 22 minutes left.

With 9:51 to play, Denison's Olivia Shiland scored her 10th goals of the season and second goal of the game, getting DU back to within one goal at 9-8. Adrian's Lindsey Day would respond with the biggest goal of the game at the 5:59 mark to put her team up two. The Bulldogs would control possession for the majority of the final five minutes of play, limiting Denison's offensive opportunities. Lisa Feroli would score off a feed from Sbrega with 1:09 but that would be as close as Denison would come.

Thurner, Sbrega, and Feroli all finished with two goals and one assist. Shiland also added two goals while Molly Chapman added one assist and Dussinger finished with one goal.

Lambert paced the Bulldogs with four points while Johnston chipped in two goals and two assists.

Denison senior Carly Tschantz gathered 10 draws while causing two turnovers for DU. The Big Red took 15 draws compared to only six for Adrian. Denison also totaled 15 ground balls with Shiland leading the way with five and Isabel Swicklik contributing three.

Denison's goalie duties were split between Grace Bodenmann and Laura Campbell. Bodenmann posted one save in the first half and Campbell notched three saves in 30 minutes of action in the second half.

Adrian improves to 3-1 with the win while DU falls to 3-1. The Big Red will return to action on Monday when they take on Manhattanville at 1:00 p.m. in Hilton Head, S.C.
