Widener Uses 6-0 Run to Down Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. Frostburg State suffered a 14-8 setback to Widener in non-conference men's lacrosse action, Saturday.

Widener used a 6-0 run that covered part of the second, third and fourth quarters to improve its record to 1-4 on the season. The Bobcats slip to 2-4 with their third-straight loss.

After falling behind 5-1 early in the second quarter, FSU battled back to bring the deficit to 6-4 with 2:47 left until halftime. Freshman Devin Colegrove scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter, the first at 13:14 and later at 6:09, to pull the hosts to within 5-2.

Widener scored at 3:16, but Bobcat senior Dan Dowd scored off a pass from freshman Greg Bourne that capitalized on a two-man advantage and trimmed the lead to 6-4 with just 2:47 showing.

Widener scored the game's next six goals that spanned until 8:00 showing left in the fourth quarter to seemingly take control.

Sophomore Ryan Serio, who scored the first goal of the contest for FSU, fed freshman Chris Rios for a goal at 6:54 that ended the Pride run at 12-5. Bobcat sophomore Devon Stailey tallied an unassisted score 35 seconds later that further trimmed the deficit to 12-6.

Widener recaptured the momentum with back-to-back goals moments later that pushed its lead to 14-6.

Rios ended the game for both team's with two goals for FSU as the final score read 14-8.

Widener attempted 47 shots to Frostburg's 24. The Pride also led 40-38 in ground balls and finished 23 of 27 in clear attempts.

Rios finished with three goals, all in the fourth quarter. He has led or tied for the team lead in goals in each of the last four games. Colegrove finished with two scores while Serio, Stailey and Dowd each had one. Serio handed out two assists.

Sophomore Billy Lark continued his stellar season as he won 16 of 25 faceoffs (64.0%). He has won at least 64 percent of his faceoffs in every game this season. Sophomore Tyler Haines stopped 13 shots, one shy of his season-high.

The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Elizabethtown at 4:00 pm.
