Yellow Jackets Yield to Griffins Dominating Offense

Lafayette Hill, PA (3/10/2012) American International slowed #12 Chestnut Hill at the start of today's contest, holding the Griffins to a 4-2 lead at the first intermission. Following the break, the game took on a different tempo, as the Griffins outscored the Yellow Jackets 7-1 in the second quarter before claiming a 22-7 victory.

Sophomore attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) led the Griffins with six goals on six shots while three others finished with at least four points in a third straight non-conference win.

Chestnut Hill College (4-1) was on the scoreboard first with goals from Melnychenko and freshman midfielder Nick Johnson (Germantown, MD) coming quickly, at 13:43 and 13:18, but AIC (0-2) slowed the Griffins before pulling even with back-to-back goals from freshman attack Bryce Serriello (Centerville, MA) at 4:44, 2-1, and 3:20, 2-2.

The stalemate did not last long, however, as junior defenseman Tom Carfagna (Laurys Station, PA) and junior attack Shane Morlock (Whitby, Ontario) connected to make it 3-2 Griffins at 3:10, before sophomore midfielder Mike Landau (Lancaster, PA) netted an unassisted tally to make it 4-2 Griffins heading to the first break.

Freshman midfielder Zak Guenther (South Hadley, MA) would score twice in the second frame for the Yellow Jackets, but that would be all they could muster in the period as the Griffins extended their advantage to 11-4 by halftime behind the efforts of juniors, attack Craig Owen (Glenolden, PA) and midfielder D.J. Klusaritz (Slatington, PA). After halftime little changed, as the Griffins rattled off seven more unanswered scores to balloon the deficit to 18-4 before closing the affair on a 22-7 final.

Serriello and Guenther finished with three goals apiece to lead the Yellow Jackets; Guenther added an assist to lead them in points with four, he also recorded two ground balls. Freshman midfielder Brian Kennedy (West Babylon, NY) offered a goal and an assist while winning 10 of 29 (.345) face-offs and recovering six ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Eric Whettell (La Salle, Manitoba) took the loss (0-2) while recording 12 saves in three quarters of play.

Owen, Johnson, and freshman midfielder Chris Mertens (Freeport, NY) each recorded four points; Owen with two goals and two assists, Johnson with three goals and an assist, and Mertens totaling a goal and three assists in addition to winning 10 of 15 (.667) face-offs and hustling to eight ground balls. Defensively, Carfagna and junior goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA) anchored the backfield.

Carfagna totaled nine ground balls and caused four turnovers in addition to providing a goal and an assist on offense. Maurer made two saves to earn the win (4-1) in 39:03 minutes of play.

The team returns to East Coast Conference (ECC) competition with a 4:00 p.m. contest at Dominican College on Friday, March 16.
