Massachusetts Maritime Sails Past Thomas

Waterville, Maine - Thomas recorded a non-conference 12-4 loss to the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers Saturday afternoon at Bill Alfond field on the campus of Colby College.

Mass. Maritime came out strong scoring six unanswered goals and never surrendering the lead. Buccaneers attackmen Daniel Sibbald led all scorers with a hat trick. Thomas midfielder Gunnar Shelton led the team with a two goal performance.

With the loss the Terriers fall to 0-3 (0-0 NAC) on the year, while the Buccaneers improve to 1-0 on the season.

The first quarter was a back and forth affair until the 4:45 mark when Dylan Freudenberg recorded the first goal of the game giving the Bucs a 1-0 lead. The Bucs quickly scored again at the 4:14 mark with a goal by John Hojnoski to put them up 2-0 to end the quarter.

The second quarter started with Mass. Maritime scoring 4 more unanswered goals. The Terrier's responded with three unanswered goals for themselves, one each by Matt Davis, Erik Tiner II and Shelton to go into half only down by three.

In the third quarter, the Bucs took control only turning the ball over 6 times and outscoring Thomas 4-1. Thomas turned the ball over a game high 13 times in the quarter. Shelton recorded his second goal of the game at the 2:00 mark as the Terriers went into the fourth trailing 10-4.

Sibbald score two of his three goals in the fourth to complete the hat trick and help lead the visitors to victory. With the win, Mass. Maritime goalie Paul Painten recorded his first win of the season making 7 saves on 11 shots. Jesse Morkeski shoulders the loss for the Terriers making a respectable 22 saves on 34 shots.

Along with Sibbald, Freudenberg, and Hojnoski; Will Doucette, Jake Bickley, and Dan Langley tallied goals for the Bucs.

The Terriers next game will be March 14th at 6:30 p.m. when they take on the Dolphins of Mt. St. Vincent at Colby College. The Buccaneers will head up I-95 to Bangor, Maine tomorrow to take on Husson at 12:00 p.m.

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Junior John Hojnoski (West Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore Daniel Sibbald (Weymouth, Mass.) each netted hat tricks to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 12-4 non-league victory over Thomas Saturday afternoon at Harold Alfond Stadium.

The visiting Buccaneers (1-0) scored the first six goals, including a pair off the stick of senior Will Doucette (Manchester, Mass.), to race out to a 6-0 advantage over the first 21-plus minutes of play in their season opener, but the host Terriers (0-3) sliced their deficit in half by tallying the final three markers before intermission to close to within 6-3 at the break.

Hojnoski scored two of Massachusetts Maritime's four third quarter goals that helped extend the visitors lead to 10-4 after 45 minutes of action, and Sibbald added a pair of tallies in the last stanza to account for the final score.

Freshman Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) added a pair of tallies in the triumph for the Buccaneers, who also received a marker and helper from junior Dan Langley (Abington, Mass.). Senior Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) accounted for the other goal of the afternoon for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received single assists off the sticks of senior Peter Menard (Somerset, Mass.) and freshman Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.).

Sophomore Gunnar Shelton (Eugene, Ore.) netted a pair of goals in the setback for Thomas, which also received a marker and helper from sophomore Erik Tiner (Lewiston, Maine). Freshman Matt Davis (Farmington, Maine) accounted for the other tally of the day for the Terriers, who also received an assist from junior Sean Machin (Brunswick, Maine).
