Petesch, Griffin Guide No. 10 Colby Past Big Blue

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Tess Petesch (Rockville, Md.) scored four times and sophomore Katie Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.) added three to help lead the 10th-ranked Colby Mules to a 16-5 non-conference victory over the University of New England in action Sunday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.

After Colby sophomore Sarah Lux (Manlius, N.Y.) opened the game with a goal 1:15 in, and UNE sophomore Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) converted a breakaway feed from junior Emily Lodge (Lyman, Maine) at the 26:00 mark, Lux gave the visitors the lead for good with just over eight minutes gone.

The Mules would go on to gain an 8-1 cushion later in the first half, and the difference was eight (10-2) at the break. Colby took 11 more shots than UNE in the frame (18-7) -- a margin that held up at the end as well (28-17).

Senior Lane McVey (Bronxville, N.Y.) notched a team-high five points for Colby (2-0), coming on two goals and three assists. Sophomore Katharine Eddy (Cheshire, Conn.) also scored twice.

For the Nor'easters (2-2), Tavella recorded Big Blue's first four scores on the day to increase her total on the season to 13. First-year Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) notched her 11th marker of the year in the closing minutes of regulation off a pass from senior Jesalyn Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.) to provide the final score. Junior Nicolle Steel (Ocean City, N.J.) also registered an assist, and forced a game-best three caused turnovers.

Colby sophomore Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, Conn.) made six saves for the visitors, who host the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday (4:30 p.m.).

Sophomore starter Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) made five stops in 30 minutes between the pipes for UNE, which heads to Husson University the same day (4:00 p.m.).
