Dolphins Defeated by Potsdam in SpringFling Opener

West Palm Beach, Fla. The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team opened play at the West Palm Beach SpringFling on Monday morning with a 14-8 loss to Potsdam. Junior Nicole Flores (Bethpage, N.Y.) led the way with three goals and rookie goalie Kacie McCormack stopped 13 shots.

Potsdam scored the first six goals of the game to grab a lead that would not be in danger the rest of the contest. The Bears opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the tilt on a tally from Emily Petit.

Mount Saint Vincent would get on the board at the 5:36 mark of the first half when freshman Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored the first of back-to-back goals to bring the Mount to within 6-2 with just over three minutes left before the half. The Bears however, would close the period with three of the final four tallies to take a 9-3 lead into the break.

Potsdam would extend its scoring run from the first half to four straight goals following two from Margaret Wall sandwiched around a marker form Maribeth Simmons to pull in front 12-3 with 20:07 remaining in the contest.

The Dolphins would close the game scoring five of the final seven goals, including all three of Flores' and one each from Samantha Ramsden (Warren, R.I.) and Dianna Lawless (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), but would never get its deficit under five.

Wall had a big day for Potsdam as she tallied five times to go along with four draw controls. Sierra Langkammerer and Aubrey McIntosh each scored a pair of goals, with McIntosh adding an assist. Carly Richards led the way with five draw controls and Kaci Milligan picked up a team-high six groundballs.

Flores finished the day with team-highs in goals and groundballs after scooping six to go along with a draw controls. Fraser and Ramsden each tallied twice, with Ramsden picking up a groundball and causing a pair of turnovers.

McCormmack played a solid game in the cage for the Dolphins and made a career-high 13 saves on Monday. Potsdam used a pair of goalies and saw Kaci Milligan earn the win with three saves in the first half. Jen Chmiel came on in the second period to make five stops.

Potsdam outshot Mount Saint Vincent 40-17 on the day and also picked up 26 groundballs to 22 for the Mount. The Bears also had the edge in draw controls 18-6 on Monday.

Monday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 1-1 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to get back above .500 on Wednesday when they take on Drew. Opening draw is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Lake Lytal Park.
