No. 17 RPI Takes Florida Victory Over Centenary
JUPITER, Fla. – Freshman Colin Fortuner scored the first three goals of his career to lead a balanced attack and #17 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) defeated Centenary, 13-3. Eleven different players had at least a point for the Engineers, who improved to 4-0. The Cyclones fall to 1-3.
A midfielder, Fortuner (Litchfield, CT/The Master's School) was one of three RPI players to register their first career goals. Attackmen John Nolan (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton High School) and Connor Sullivan (Bedford, NH/Bedford High School), both of whom are freshmen, were the others.
Rensselaer broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and a 5-0 edge in the second before Centenary got on the board. The Engineers carried a 7-1 lead into halftime and made it a 9-1 game with just a quarter to play. RPI outscored the Cyclones by two (4-2) in the final period for the 10-goal victory.
In addition to Fortuner, others with multiple points for Rensselaer were senior attack Andrew Miller (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford), who had two goals and an assist, senior midfielder Andrew Liptak (Westfield, MA/Westfield), who had a pair of goals, and junior attack David Hey (Chapel Hill, NC/Durham Academy), who notched a goal and an assist.
Junior James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) earned the win by making four saves on five shots in the first 25 minutes. For Centenary, senior Kyle McVay (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Twp.) had 15 saves in three quarters of action.
Offensively for the Cyclones, junior Conor Nolan (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) had a goal and an assist, while two others had single goals.
RPI returns to action on Saturday afternoon at Elmira (1:00 pm). Centenary plays again on March 21 when it hosts Scranton at 3:30 pm.
