Western New England Rallies Late to Edge Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. Western New England outscored the Spartans 6-1 over the final 15 minutes of action to steal a 13-12 non-conference win from Castleton State on Tuesday evening at Spartan Stadium. With the win the Golden Bears improve to 3-2, while Castleton dips to 1-2.

Freshman Kate Auer (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) led the Spartan attack with three goals and assist, while sophomore Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) added three goals. Sophomore Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) chipped in a pair of goals and an assist, while freshman Meghan O'Sullivan (Merrick, N.Y.) rounded out the Spartans with multiple points at one goal and one assist.

Senior Katie Toomy (Northborough, Mass.) had a game-high six points on five goals and an assist, giving her 15 points (12 goals, 3 assists) over her last two games. Freshman Jessica Scannapieco (Blue Bell, Pa.) posted three goals, while sophomore Kelsey Sherman (Buchanan, N.Y.) added two goals and an assist. Junior Ali Pepe (North Reading, Mass.) notched one goal and one assist and senior Megan Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) had a pair of assists to round out the Golden Bears with multiple points.

Clark's third marker of the game gave Castleton a 10-7 lead with 16:08 left in the contest, but the Golden Bears answered with three-straight to tie the game with 11:01 remaining in the game.

Toomy notched her fourth of the game to start the surge, converting on a free-position attempt with 14:40 left in the game. The play was initiated nicely by Scannapieco, as she pounced on her own rebound after a Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, R.I.) save and found a cutting Toomy who was fouled. Less than one minute later Scannapieco cut the Spartan lead to one, and Toomy drew the Golden Bears even with 11:01 left for the first time since the first minute of play off a Doyle helper.

Castleton took the lead back less than two minutes later on Flodstrom's second of the contest, which was set up by the hustle of junior Samanthan Bonasera (Chelsea, Vt.). After a Spartan turnover in their attacking third, Bonasera ran down a Western New England defender to cause a turnover, corralled the ground ball and set up Flodstrom for the one-on-one chance.

The teams traded goals once again, with Castleton taking its final lead at the 7:19 mark on a Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.) marker set up by Auer.

Western New England answered with two-straight goals, one by Sherman and the final by Pepe, giving the Golden Bears their first lead with 2:45 left.

Castleton controlled the scoreboard for the entire first half, before Western New England came out strong after intermission, outshooting the Spartans by a two-to-one margin over the final 30 minutes.

The Spartans reeled off three-straight goals to break a 1-1 tie starting at the 21:54 mark of the first half. Mark started the scoring barrage with an unassisted tally, Auer followed suit and Flodstrom capped it off with a free-position marker.

Scannapieco netted her eighth of the season off a Kelsey Sherman (Buchanan, N.Y.) helper to bring Western New England back within 4-2 at the 9:37 mark, but Castleton answered with a pair of goals, including Auer's second of the contest and one from Wardwell.

Toomy put in back-to-back tallies for the Golden Bears, including an impressive individual effort at 1:26 to make it 6-4, but once again Castleton answered as O'Sullivan potted her first collegiate goal with 11 seconds remaining to push the lead back to three goals heading into halftime.

Scannnapieco was excellent off the draw all day for Western New England, grabbing nine draw controls, while Toomy had a game-high six ground balls.

Derbyshire was impressive in net, finishing with 16 saves, including 11 in the second half. Emily Castleman (Wilbraham, Mass.) finished with 10 saves in the win.

Castleton returns to Spartan Stadium Sunday to host Southern Maine at 2:00 pm. Western New England will travel to Mount Holyoke Thursday at 4:30 pm.
