Newsome Nets Seven as UNE Runs by Husson

BANGOR, Maine -- First-year Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) tied the University of New England single-game points record (12) with seven goals and five assists, and the Nor'easters received an additional five goals from sophomore Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) in a 20-6 non-conference victory over Husson Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 13) at Boucher Field.

Newsome only needed nine shots to rack-up her season-high goal total. The 12 points in a game matched Ashley MacDonald's output against Saint Joseph's College during her senior year (2008).

Tavella's five goals and six points were also her highest marks of the season. The Nor'easters, who out-shot their opponents by a 42-23 margin, improve to 3-2 with the triumph.

UNE jumped out to an 8-0 cushion after 17-plus minutes of action and never looked back. Newsome had a hand in five of the goals early on in the contest.

Junior Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.) added three scores for Big Blue, and first-year Rachel Schwaner (Holderness, N.H.) recorded her first four points (2 goals, 2 assists) of the season. Junior Nicolle Steel (Ocean City, N.J.), sophomore Cassidy Ruocco (Dover, N.H.), and first-year Hannah Warren (Harrison, Maine) each chipped in with one marker for the visitors.

Sophomore starting goalie Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) made four saves and allowed no goals in just over 20 minutes of game time before giving way to first-year Irene Bloomer (Brewster, Mass.) and sophomore Rachel Lee (York, Maine), who split the remaining minutes in goal to make one and five stops, respectively.

The match was the opener for Husson (0-1), which got four of its goals from Caitlyn Stauffer. Kaleigh Morneau turned aside six shots in defending the cage.

The Nor'easters take off for Florida at the end of the week for a pair of dates in the Sunshine State during Spring Break. UNE faces Franklin Pierce University on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) and then the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Monday (6:30 p.m.) -- both in Clermont, Fla.
