No. 18 Cabrini Stops No. 16 Bullets for First Time Ever

RADNOR, Pa. In the final game before its Centennial Conference opener, 16th-ranked Gettysburg dropped an 8-1 decision at 18th-ranked Cabrini on Wednesday afternoon.

Cabrini (4-2), which scored the game's first three goals, earned its first-ever win over the Bullets in seven tries.

Bobby Thorp led Cabrini with three goals and two assists while Mike Leyden scored two goals. Erick Zarzecki made eight saves for the Cavaliers, who held a 37-18 shot advantage.

Junior Ryan Fumai (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored the lone goal for Gettysburg (2-3). Sophomore Jon Maddalone (Newtown, Pa./Choate Rosemary Hall [Conn.]) made a career-high eight saves in 38:37 off the bench and yielded the last five goals after junior J.T. McCook (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) stopped four shots over the opening 21:23.

Cabrini scored inside the final 10 seconds in each of the first two quarters. The hosts led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter after Matt Biegel struck with eight seconds to go.

Fumai made it a two-goal game when he converted a dish from junior Bobby DeWees (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) with 10:05 left in the opening half. That's how the score remained until Damian Sobieski found the back of the net with 5:20 showing. Leyden added a goal two seconds before the horn to give the Cavaliers a 5-1 halftime lead.

The Cabrini defense made the lead stand up, blanking the Bullets the rest of the way. The Cavs added one goal in the third quarter and two tallies 45 seconds apart midway through the fourth quarter.
