Sukonik's 8 Goals Lead Lehigh Past Binghamton

BETHLEHEM, Pa. Lehigh (3-4) defeated Binghamton (2-3) 17-10 Wednesday behind freshman Carli Sukonik's career-high eight goals. Senior Kelly Draper had three goals and three assists, while senior Lauren Murray added three goals and two assists. Sukonik's goals tied her season total and were the highest goal output by a Mountain Hawk since Lauren Dykstra had eight on March 21, 2009 vs. American.

The Mountain Hawks' 17 goals were a season high and the most scored since March 27 of last season when Lehigh tallied 18 in a win at Lafayette.

Lehigh led 7-6 with less than a minute to go in the first half until Draper scored a free-position goal with three seconds left to extend the Mountain Hawks' lead. Her goal was the first of eight straight for Lehigh, scoring seven in a row over a 12 minute stretch to build a 15-6 lead that Lehigh did not relinquish.

"We've been in a bit of a drought scoring goals so it was nice to be able to finish," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We've had some lulls out of halftime and let teams crawl back into games so it was nice to pull away in the second half. I think it's a good win for us all the way around."

The Mountain Hawks trailed 2-0 before Sukonik scored her first goal to cut the deficit in half. After seven minutes without a score from both sides, Binghamton extended its lead to 3-1 with 14:35 to go in the first half.

Sukonik then scored twice in a minute and a half to even the game at 3-3. Murray tacked on a goal shortly after to give Lehigh a 4-3 edge but Binghamton came right back to tie things up. The teams went back and forth again to even the game at 5-5. Murray and Sukonik scored to give Lehigh a two-goal cushion but Binghamton scored with 45 seconds left.

Draper then scored on a free position to give Lehigh an 8-6 lead and some momentum into the second half where less than a minute in, Sukonik tallied her fifth goal of the game. A little more than two minutes later, Murray scored to push Lehigh's lead to 10-6.

Freshman Lauren Wilcoxx scored her first career goal and junior Alissa Hardiman followed that up with a goal as Lehigh doubled up Binghamton 12-6 with 22:41 left. Sukonik scored two more times and junior Julie McBrien scored her second of the game, all in a one minute and 12 second stretch to extend Lehigh's lead to 15-6.

Lehigh held Binghamton without a goal for 15 and half minutes before the Bearcats scored three straight goals to cut Lehigh's lead to 15-9 with 12:24 left. The Mountain Hawks scored two more times, one from Draper and one from Sukonik, while Lehigh again held Binghamton without a goal for 10 minutes en route to victory.

Junior MaryLeah DiNisco had seven saves in the win.

Lehigh dominated the draw controls 23-6 including a stellar 13-1 in the second half. Lehigh also outshot Binghamton 32-24, again dominating in the second half with a 17-8 edge.

Binghamton was led by Lis Zuern and Brittany Stufano whom each had three goals.

Lehigh improved to 3-0 all-time vs. Binghamton. It was the first meeting between the schools since 2005 when Lehigh won 16-5. The Mountain Hawks first defeated the Bearcats in 2002 (23-4).

The Mountain Hawks will look to ride their momentum on the road as Lehigh takes on Bucknell Saturday in a Patriot League Clash. Opening draw is set for 12:00 p.m.
