Boxers Use Big Second Half to Pull Away at Linfield

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - A pair of newcomers led a trio of four-goal scorers for Pacific Wednesday night as the Boxers used a big second half to score an 18-8 rout of Linfield in women's lacrosse action at the Linfield Lacrosse Field.

Melanie Niehus (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), Amy Mayhugh (Fr., Tigard, Ore.) and Carmen Taplin (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) all finished with four goals, with Mayhugh scoring all of her goals in a second half that saw the Boxers (2-2) outscore the Wildcats 11-2.

Kristen Dick (Jr., Auburn, Wash.) added two goals while Kelly Stevens (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) registered a goal and a season-high three assists. Pacific outshot Linfield 35-16 and also owned a 15-12 advantage in draw controls while turning the ball over just nine times.

Mariah Jones led Linfield (0-3) with four goals to go along with an assist. Zooey Spring added two goals and an assist.

Pacific opened the game by scoring the first two goals, but Linfield came back to take a 3-2 lead when Halee Helgerson tallied off of Taylor Fisher's assist at the 18:48 mark. Pacific answered back with three unassisted strikes over the next 10 minutes by Niehus, Stevens and Jessica Hattig (Fr., Portland, Ore.), taking a 5-3 lead with 8:09 left. The Boxers added two more goals in the final four minutes before Jones' tally with 1:25 left drew the Wildcats within 7-5 at halftime.

The two teams traded two-goal blocks over the first five minutes of the second half before Pacific closed the game on a 9-1 run. Dick's goal with 23:22 to go started a run of six straight goals for the Boxers, which culminated with a pair of Taplin goals at the 15:42 and 11:58 marks. Spring broke the streak with her second goal of the game with 5:27 to go before Pacific closed the contest with three more scores.

Ali Loeb (So., Portland, Ore.) earned the win once again for Pacific in goal, needing just three saves. Tori Kraft made eight saves in the loss for Linfield.

Pacific continues play on Sunday when they play Pomona-Pitzer in a neutral site match on Sunday in Tacoma, Wash. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
