RPI Routs Curry to Win SpringFling Beach Division

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Eight different players tallied, including a game-high five goals from sophomore Rachel Scofield, as RPI defeated Curry, 15-3 to win the Beach Division of the 2012 SpringFling Tournament. It marks the second straight season that the Engineers who are now 3-0 have won their bracket at the event. The Colonels slip to 3-1 overall.

Rensselaer got to work early in the offensive end as junior Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and sophomore Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI/LaSalle Academy) each scored in the first six minutes for a 2-0 advantage.

Following a tally by senior Madeline Sission (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) at 16:09, the Colonels fought back to close the gap as junior Ana Bottary (Hull, MA/Hull) scored on the free position at 10:18 and then assisted on a goal by sophomore Kelly Ethier (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) less than four minutes later to make it a 3-2 game.

The Engineers took control from that point, scoring three goals, including back-to-back efforts from Scofield (Albany, NY/South Colonie), to end the opening half.

Scofield set the tempo in the final stanza, notching her third of the game at 27:57. Curry sophomore Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) made it 7-3 seconds after RPI's goal, but the Engineers grabbed back the momentum and held on for eight straight goals to close out the game.

In addition to two more tallies from Scofield, the Engineers saw sophomore Julia Wright (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) tack on two goals and an assist, while classmate Michelle Denny (Lusby, MD/Patuxent) added a goal and a game-best three assists.

Other multiple point efforts came from Maguire, who added two goals and two assists, while Colitz finished with two goals.

Between the pipes, junior Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY/Philips Exeter Academy) stopped nine shots to move to 3-0 on the season.
