Maritime Defeats St. Joseph for Denning's First Win

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 16, 2012) Maritime battled St. Joseph (Ct.) to a 19-9 victory Friday afternoon at Reinhart Field. The win was the Privateers' first of the season, moving their record to 1-1, and was Ann Denning's first victory as a collegiate head coach. The visiting Blue Jays slip to 0-2 to start the year.

Three players recorded hat tricks in the game for Maritime, led by senior Kristen Saporito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), who had a game-high seven points with six goals and one assist. Classmate Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) was right behind with five goals and one assist, while freshman Tessa Jardine (Valley Stream, N.Y./Waterford) scored three goals. Brady led all players with 16 draw controls, while Saporito and junior Victoria DeLouise (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) each picked up a game-high four ground balls.

Senior Natalie Jackson (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) contributed four points with two goals and two assists, while sophomore Megan White (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) also tallied two goals. Freshman Sarah DeBerardinis (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore Senior) rounded out the Privateer scorers. In goal, freshman Jamie Rocco (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) came up brilliant with 14 saves for her first collegiate win.

For the Blue Jays, senior Diana Soucier (Avon, Conn.) registered four goals and freshman Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) had three goals and an assist. Sophomore goalie Stacey Velasquez (Norwalk, Conn.) made 11 saves in the losing effort.

The Privateers return to action on Thursday, March 22, when the squad opens up Skyline Conference play against St. Joseph's College of Long Island. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
