Vassar Suffers One-Goal Loss at SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA, NY (March 16, 2012) Down 6-4 at halftime, Vassar College came roaring back in the second half to tie the contest twice and come within one goal on four other occasions, but fell one tally short in falling to SUNY Oneonta, 14-13, on Friday afternoon.

With less than six minutes left in the game and the Brewers trailing 14-11, a goal by sophomore midfielder Malena Harrang at the 24:51 mark and one from sophomore defender Emma Carter at 28:58 brought the Brewers within 14-13, but the Red Dragons had enough staving power to hold off any further Vassar momentum.

Vassar drops to 2-2 on the season and visits William Smith in its Liberty League opener on Friday, March 30 at 4:00 pm. Oneonta improves to 2-0 and hosts Manhattanville tomorrow at 1:00 pm.

The Brewers got three goals from Carter and two each from Harrang and junior midfielder Marissa Reilly, and an outstanding 16 save performance from freshman goalie Katharine Pula, against 37 Red Dragon shots. Vassar had 20 shots in the contest.

Reilly got the Brewers on the board first with her ninth goal of the season, but SUNY Oneonta went into intermission leading 6-4. It was a contest in which the Red Dragons were able to take a pair of three goal leads at 9-6 and 14-11, but on each occasion the Brewers were able to close the gap.

Trailing 9-6, Vassar got goals from Reilly freshman attack Dara Davis and Harrang to tie the contest at 9-9 and a goal by Carter to tie the contest at 10-10, but the Red Dragons were able to go on two late game spurts, one that took the lead to 12-10 and when Vassar drew within 12-11, another that extended the margin to 14-11.

Red Dragon attack Caroline Tulley had four goals for the hosts, including the game winner with 5:38 to play in the game.
