Slippery Rock Escapes with One-Goal Win over Royals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Queens fell 13-12 this afternoon to Slippery Rock University at the Queens Sports Complex in a non-conference women's lacrosse game. The Royals now sit at 4-5 on the season, while Slippery Rock improves to 2-0.

Shannon Casey delivered the ball to Brittany Philip for six goals in today's game. Casey also scored a goal herself giving her a team-high seven points. Brittany Barnwell and Jessica Rooney each netted two goals. Barnwell led the Royals in ground balls and caused turnovers with seven and three, respectively

Casey Quinn led The Rock scoring seven goals, including the game-winner. Amy Halls was able to notch two goals. Lauren Laubach led all on the field with nine draw controls.

The Royals started the game strong with Casey finding a slashing Philip to score the first two goals of the game. The Rock tied things up after Quinn got in on the action tallying back-to-back scores within 32 seconds of each other. Queens responded reeling off four in a row pulling away from the visitors, 6-2. However, Slippery Rock would close the half with a 5-1 run knotting the game up, 7-7, at the half.

Philip and Casey got the Royals going again in the second pairing up to give Queens an 8-7 lead at 27:37. After The Rock's Katie Roof tied the contest back up a minute later, Queens added two more to the board for a 10-8 lead at 22:16. The momentum then shifted in Slippery Rock's favor as they tied the close game up once again with 13:02 to play. They then got their first lead of the game at 8:16 when Morgan Pettit blasted a ball into the net. A little over two minutes later, Barnwell equalized everything at 12-12.

The Royal then possessed the next draw and raced down the field looking for the go ahead goal coming up unlucky on a number of tries. With 1:56 on the clock, Quinn of The Rock would score what would eventually be the game-winner. Queens had three shots to take the game into overtime in the final minutes, but came up short.

The Royals were edged in shots 31-29, but won the battle for ground balls 28-25. Slippery Rock won 17 draws to Queens' 10. Chelsea Lancashire took the loss in goal after getting 14 stops, while Elizabeth Byrne earned the win after collecting five saves.

The Royals will return to action on March 21 when they host No. 6 Limestone College at 6:00 p.m..
