No. 17 Rensselaer Wins at Elmira to Start Season 5-0

ELMIRA, N.Y. Led by a five-goal effort to open the game, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team defeated Elmira College, 11-5 in non-conference action on Saturday. The 17th-ranked Engineers move to 5-0 on the season, while the Soaring Eagles slip to 3-1 on the season.

The Engineers jumped out to a quick lead in the opening quarter, going up 5-2 after the first 15 minutes. Senior captain Andrew Liptak (Westfield, MA/Westfield) got things going less than two minutes in with an unassisted tally.

Elmira battled back to tie the game with 12:35 to play as senior captain TJ White (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) connected off a pass from sophomore Christian Archambaul (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), but Rensselaer continued to press to the mid-point as senior captain Andrew Miller (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) scored unassisted and junior Mike Sarson (Lewis Center, OH/St. Francis DeSales) converted off a feed from classmate Eric Valero (Princeton Jct., NJ/W. Windsor Plainsboro) for a 3-1 lead with 5:11 remaining.

After a Soaring Eagles goal by David Evert (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield), a pair of Engineers' freshmen pushed it to 5-2 as Colin Fortuner (Litchfield, CT/The Master's School) and Brandon Coley (Darien, CT/Darien) each scored within seven seconds of other to end the opening quarter of scoring.

White helped close the gap for Elmira to open the second quarter, but Rensselaer added goals from junior Brett Overend (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills) and Valero for a 7-3 advantage at halftime.

Junior Wes Rudy (Doylestown, PA/The Hill School) scored to open the third quarter of action, but the Eagles responded to make it 8-4 as sophomore Jackson Correia (Simsbury, CT/The Masters School) put one past Engineers netminder James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) at 13:49 off a pass from Mike DeMar.

RPI wasted little time in responding as Miller notched his second of the game early in the fourth quarter to give the visitors a five-goal (9-4) lead once more. White fired in his third of the game with 11:47 remaining, but Fortuner's second of the game and a goal from junior Max Blair (West Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep.) at the 5:14 mark made it an 11-5 advantage for Rensselaer.

Leading the offensive effort for RPI was Miller, who notched two goals and added an assist. Fortuner added two goals, while Valero and Liptak each added a goal and an assist. In the cage, Manchester posted the win with eight saves on the afternoon.

For Elmira, White had three goals, while Correia added a goal and an assist. In goal, Dave Bucchino (Cedar Grove, NJ/Bow) stopped 11 shots.
