Dominican College Drops CACC Opener at Holy Family

Philadelphia, PA (3/17/12) -- Dominican College dropped their first CACC game of the 2012 season, 13-7, to host Holy Family this afternoon. With the loss Dominican falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the CACC, while Holy Family improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Tigers scored the first six goals of the contest to take a 6-0 lead with 8:11 to go in the first half. Dominican got on the board with 5:28 left in the first half as freshman attacker Allison Smithwick (Commack, NY) tallied her fifth goal of the season off the assist from Emily Murray (Oakdale, NY) to make the score 6-1 at intermission.

Dominican opened second half scoring with a 2-0 spurt as Brianna Blank (Point Pleasant, NJ) recorded her second goal of the year after a pass from Aubree Williams (Great Meadows, NJ). Smithwick followed with her second goal of the game on an unassisted goal with 24:37 remaining to cut the deficit to 6-3.

A free position goal by the Tigers made the score 7-3, but Blank answered back less than a minute later with her second game goal to once again bring the Lady Chargers within three goals.

Holy Family University went on to score three consecutive goals to build up a 10-3 advantage before Gina Sparaco (Freeport, NY) broke the run with an unassisted goal with 11:35 to go. Williams made the score 11-6 with another unassisted goal and sophomore Olivia Antonopoulos (Baldwin, NY) netted the last Lady Charger goal with 2:20 on the clock to make the score 12-7 and the Tigers scored a goal with one tick left for the final 13-7 victory.

Goalie Veronica Iozzi (Chester, NJ) made eight saves in the loss. Both Smithwick and Blank finished the afternoon with two goals apiece.

DC returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to CACC foe, Post University.
