Mas, Stern Help Catamounts Outgun Columbia

NEW YORK Sydney Mas scored four goals and Samantha Stern added six points (1 goal, 5 assists) to lead the Vermont Catamounts to a 14-11 victory over Columbia at Robert K. Kraft Field on Saturday in non-conference women's lacrosse action.

"Columbia played a hard fought game, they made us to work for everything. I was pleased with how we responded to the challenge to get the victory," said Vermont head coach Jen Johnson.

The two teams traded goals through the first 12 minutes of the game. At the 18:09 mark, Paige Cuscovitch scored two unassisted tallies to put Columbia up, 5-3.

Vermont responded with four straight goals, including a pair by Mas, to take a 7-5 lead with 3:42 remaining in the half.

The Lions scored twice in the final two minutes, but the Catamounts took an 8-7 lead into halftime.

Cuscovitch netted the first goal of the second half to even the score for the fifth time in the game, but UVM answered with three straight goals from Mas, Adison Rounds and Allison Pfohl to re-take an 11-8 lead with 26:15 left in the game.

The Lions were held to just three goals over the final 18 minutes, as UVM out scored Columbia 6-4 in the second half.

Pfohl added four goals for Vermont and Rounds was credited with six draw controls. Laura Barber made eight stops in the Vermont net.

Cuscovitch led the Lions with five goals and Kacie Johnson added six points on three goals and three assists. Skylar Dabbar recorded 11 saves in the Columbia goal.

Vermont improves to 5-2 overall, while Columbia falls to 1-4 on the year. The Catamounts continue a four-game road swing, traveling to Quinnipiac on Wednesday (March 21) for a 2:00 p.m. game.
