Mercy Gets First Win of Season at Wheeling Jesuit

MARTINS FERRY, Ohio (Mar. 17, 2012) On Saturday, Mercy took on ECC-opponent Wheeling Jesuit, looking for its first win of the 2012 campaign. The Mavericks accomplished just that, as junior attacker Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.), senior attacker Sal Spinelli (East Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Patrick Hodapp (Oak Ridge, N.J.) all scored hat tricks to help propel Mercy past the Cardinals, 10-7, at Purple Rider Stadium.

Marzocca kicked off the scoring by putting Mercy (1-3, 1-2 ECC) on the scoreboard with a little under two minutes elapsed in the opening quarter. Teammates Erik Grady (Medford, N.Y.) and Spinelli recorded the Mavericks' second and third goals of the game to string together a 3-0 run. Wheeling Jesuit (4-2, 1-2 ECC) was able to notch a goal at the 2:59 mark to cut its deficit to 3-1.

The goal pattern in the second quarter went Cardinals-Mavericks-Cardinals-Mavericks, with Spinelli and Marzocca finding the back of the netting for Mercy, respectively. At halftime, Mercy led, 5-3.

Wheeling Jesuit mirrored what Mercy did in the opening stanza as the Cardinals scored three straight before Hodapp was able to break the streak and notch a tally for the Mavericks at the 3:17 mark.

The two teams entered the final quarter with the game tied at 6-all. However, Mercy came up big and scored four goals one each by Spinelli and Marzocca, and two by Hodapp to secure the 10-7 victory.

For the Mavericks, senior midfielder Craig Blom (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), Marzocca and Hodapp each were responsible for an assist, while junior midfielder John Lionetti (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) had four ground balls to lead the squad. Junior goalkeeper T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) saved 15 shots from going past him as he earned his first win of the year.

For the Cardinals, sophomore attack Brian Frank (Huntingtown, Md.) scored three goals, while junior goalie Jim LaPenna (Bel Air, Md.) recorded 10 saves in the cage.

Head Coach Steve Manitta and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday when they host Lake Erie at 1:00 p.m. Please continue to check for where the game will be played. .
