Simon Fraser Knocks off No. 18 Illinois in Oregon

SALEM, OR (March 18, 2012) A game after their first out of conference win of the season, Simon Fraser earned their first Top 25 victory of 2012 as the Clan knocked off No. 18 Illinois 8-4.

Fraser was led offensively by junior attack Colton Dow (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary) with 2 goals and an assist, while midfielders Brendan Farrell (Milton, ON/St. Michael's College School) and Eric Ransom (Sherwood Park, AB/Bev Facey HS) each contributed two points with a goal and an assist.

Fraser's defense offered the games' biggest story line as the starting unit of Bayne Bosquet (Coldstream, BC/Kalamalka Secondary), Mitch Frank (Burnaby, BC/St. Thomas More Collegiate) and converted midfielder Mark Hilker (Bowmanville, ON/Clarington Central Secondary) held the Fighting Illini to 2 goals until late in the contest, with only 1 coming at even strength.

LSM Riley Wanzer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak HS) continued his strong play in transition, while fellow sophomore Darren Zwack (Sherwood Park, AB/Archbishop Jordan HS) posted a career high save percentage of .826 as he backstopped the Clan with 19 saves. The game was played neutral site at Salem Academy in Salem, Oregon.

Illinois midfielder Jeremy Weier (West Chicago, IL/Carol Stream HS) opened the scoring to record the only goal of the first quarter and give the Illini their lone lead of the contest. In the second frame, Ransom fed Dow on the man-up to get Fraser on the board at 1-1, followed by Dow assisting on a goal by sophomore midfielder Frank Davalos (Moose Jaw, SK/Albert E. Peacock Collegiate) to put the Clan ahead 2-1 at the half.

Despite the low offensive output, SFU maintained their patience with the ball, while a renewed effort on the ride allowed the Clan to continue to control the time of possession out of the break. Sophomore attack Calvin Craig (Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) used a solo effort to put SFU up 3-1.

Sophomore attack Sam Weintstein (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North HS) converted an Illinois man-up to close the gap back to one at 3-2. Fraser sophomore Brendan Farrell drove from the midfield and put a bounce shot into the back of the Illini net to close out the third quarter scoring and extend the Clan lead back to two at 4-2 heading down the stretch.

For the second straight game Simon Fraser would use a strong fourth quarter to close out their opponent. Dow scored his second of the game to reset the sore to 5-2, before freshmen midfielder Casey Foster (Edmonton, AB/St. Francis Xavier HS) gave Fraser their largest lead of the day at 6-2.

A two-man advantage would allow Illinois back on the board and gave the Fighting Illini life at 6-3 but another two-goal SFU run would quickly put the Clan back in charge as the clock ticked down to the final minutes. Illinois would score once more before time expired for a final score of 8-4.

Simon Fraser will look to continue their strong play as they take a two-game win streak to California where they will be put to the test against No. 5 Chapman on Friday, March 23, before facing-off against their third straight ranked opponent in No. 21 Loyola Marymount on Sunday, March 25.

Illinois will enjoy the next three days in the Pacific Northwest to conclude their spring break before heading home where they will host Western Michigan University in their next game on Saturday, March 31.
