George Washington Rolls by Mount St. Mary's
WASHINGTON - Ten different Colonials found the back of the net, led by three goals from freshman Rachel Mia and five points from senior Sarah Phillips, as George Washington defeated Mount St. Mary's, 16-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field.
GW improves to 6-2 on the season, matching the 2005 squad, which won nine of its first 11 games, for the best start through eight games in program history.
Mia posted the third hat trick of her brief career, while Phillips' five points came on two goals and three assists. With 96 career goals, Phillips is just four shy of becoming the fourth Colonial ever to score 100 in her career, and her 22 assists on the year are tied for the fourth-most in a single season in school history, just five behind Taylor Donahue's program record of 27, which she set in 2009.
Sophomore Lindsay DiAntonio (2g, 1a), freshman Addi Bolin
(2g, 1a) and senior Megan Seidman (1g, 2a) each tallied three points against the Mount. DiAntonio added a game-high six ground balls as well as two draw controls, and junior Nicole Lacey totaled two goals, three ground balls and a game-best eight draws.
Mount St. Mary's (1-7) jumped out to a 2-1 lead through five minutes of play, but the Colonials tallied six unanswered goals to go up 7-2 and take control of the game with 10:20 to play in the first half. Phillips recorded two goals and two assists on GW's first four goals of the game.
Mount attack Erin Seipp broke up the Colonials' run with a goal at the 5:22 mark, and the score remained 7-3 at halftime.
GW started the second stanza strong, scoring five straight goals in a span of just over four minutes during an 8-1 run to take a commanding 15-4 lead. The Colonials forced nine Mountaineers' turnovers and broke four Mount clearing attempts during that stretch.
The Mount responded with four of the game's final five goals, but it was not enough to overcome its deficit.
Seipp led the Mountaineers with three points on two goals and an assist.
GW junior goalie Jess Hicks recorded four saves for the Colonials to improve to 5-1 on the season. Brigid McTavish and Sarah Jane Leder split time between the pipes for the Mount, combining for seven saves.
GW outshot Mount St. Mary's, 25-14, and held a 19-10 advantage on ground balls.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday, when they visit Denver. Opening draw is set for 3:00 p.m. ET.

Erin Seipp (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Preparatory) paced the Mount (1-7) with two goals and an assist. Aubrey Rubino (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) notched her first two collegiate goals and Kaitlyn Larrimore (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) also found the twine twice in the loss.

Phillips had a hand in the first three tallies in the run after finding the twine at 5:14, assisting Diantonio at 7:05 and then found the back of the net at 11:49. Bolin registered back-to-back markers at 13:39 and 18:47 before Seidman capped the spurt with an unassisted tally at 19:40 to give George Washington a 7-2 margin.
