UC Davis Sprints Past Central Connecticut

DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior midfielder Hannah Mirza scored a game-high five goals while attacker Elizabeth Datino tied the school record of six assists, helping UC Davis take a 18-6 victory over Central Connecticut in non-conference action at Aggie Stadium Monday afternoon. The Aggies improve to 4-3 for the year. The Blue Devils fall to 2-3 overall.

Datino, who leads all NCAA Division I players in points per game, also scored four goals for 10 points. Her six assists ties Christina Corsa, who posted that amount against Saint Mary's last season; and Katie McGovern, who first established the mark at Wittenburg back in April of 2007.

Mirza's total marks her highest effort since scoring six vs. Long Island in March of 2011. She also had three assists and a team-leading four draw controls. Freshmen Elizabeth Landry and Charlotte Morris each chipped in three goals, junior Anna Geissbuhler added two and freshman Allie Lehner netted one.

Both teams struggled offensively to start the game, failing to net a goal in the first 12:16 of play. After five missed shots, the Aggies reached the board in the 18th when Mirza assisted Morris on a second-chance opportunity. Morris assisted Geissbuhler to make it 2-0 with 14:15 to go, then Central's Betsy Vendel put her team onto the scoresheet with an unassisted drive at the 12:59 mark.

UC Davis found its stride down the final stretch of the first half, scoring six unanswered to take an 8-1 lead. Datino hit three goals with two assists in that span, then assisted on two more goals in the Aggies' 6-2 stretch in the second half.

Overall, UC Davis outshot its guest by a 34-17 margin, won 23 ground balls to the Devils' 15, and cleared 18 of 20 attempts in transition. Central won the draw controls battle, 13-12, with senior Ashley Mara picking up seven. The six goals allowed also represents a season low for the Aggies, who already rank third nationally in offense.

The Aggies break for final examinations before taking a Spring Break road trip to New England. They face Holy Cross next Monday, folowed by Bryant and Vermont on March 27 and 29, respesctively.
