Coogle Scores Five Goals as Towson Topples Temple

PHILADELPHIA – Towson's Rhiannon Coogle scored five goals to lead her team to a 17-7 win over Temple lacrosse on Tuesday afternoon at Geasey Field. The Owls (6-3) fell behind early and were never able to catch up to the Tigers (6-2), who were ranked in the national poll last week.

Despite trailing Towson in shots just 30-26, the Owls were unable to get much past the Tigers' goalkeeper, Mary Teeters, who made 11 saves in the game. Towson controlled a majority of the draw controls in the contest, finishing with a 17-9 advantage.

Stephany Parcell and Jaymie Tabor scored two goals apiece for Temple, while Stephanie Markunas assisted on three of the Owls' goals.

Coogle scored the third goal in a 3-0 Towson run to start the game, and Temple was unable to get on the board until over 11 minutes into the game. Parcell put one in the back of the net on an assist from Charlotte Swavola, but Coogle answered with two more goals in a 4-0 run.

Keelin Hood scored with an assist from Markunas before the end of the first half, and Temple trailed 7-2 at the break.

Towson started the second half with another three straight goals to lead by eight, and the Owls were never able to come within fewer than six the rest of the way.

Kellee Pace and Swavola each scored for the Owls in the second half.

Temple will have more than a week off before its next game, which takes the Owls to St. Bonaventure on Friday, March 30 for a 3:00 p.m. contest.

TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore attacker Rhiannon Coogle had a career-high seven points to help lead Towson to a 17-7 win at Temple on Tuesday afternoon. Coogle was one of nine players to score, as the Tigers (6-2) won their second straight game.

“I'm pleased with the victory today,” said Coach Sonia LaMonica. “We had some players step up and deliver important performances today and Rhiannon gave us a nice lift.”

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in the game while scoring the first three goals. The Owls (6-3) scored their first goal at 18:37 to make it a 3-1 game. Towson would score the next four goals to take a 7-1 lead with 13:07 remaining in the half. The fourth goal of that run came from Coogle and completed her “hat trick”. It was Coogle's first “hat trick” of the season and third of her career. Temple scored the final goal of the half at 6:14 and the Tigers took a 7-2 lead at the half.

The Tigers held a 15-10 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in draw controls in the first half.

Towson opened the second half by scoring the first three goals. Sophomores Ashleigh Rohrback and Kelly Murkey scored on free position shots while Coogle scored her fourth goal of the game on an assist by senior attacker Sarah Appelt. The Owls scored the next two goals to make it a 10-4 game with 20:24 remaining.

Just 21 seconds after the Temple goals, Coogle scored on a free position shot for her fifth goal of the game which gave the Tigers an 11-4 lead. Junior attacker Olivia Turner scored her third goal of the season to give Towson a 12-4 lead with 15:57 to play.

Temple briefly halted the Tiger run with a goal at 15:05 to make it a 12-5. A Rohrback goal and back-to-back scores from junior midfielder Kelly Custer, gave Towson a 15-5 lead with 13:08 remaining in the game. Custer's goals which came 1:27 apart completed her “hat trick” in the game.

The two teams would each score two more times in the game to make a 17-7 final. The Tigers' goals would come in the final three minutes of action as a pair of players, senior midfielder Katie DeFilippo and freshman attacker Sarah Maloof scored their first career goals.
