Scranton Starts Fast, Breezes Past Misericordia

University of Scranton found its offensive rhythm early on Tuesday, scoring seven times in the opening 10 minutes en route to a 19-4 victory over Misericordia at Fitzpatrick Field.

Freshman midfielder Emily Goss (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) had five goals and two assists and sophomore attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) had five goals and an assist in the victory. Goss now leads the team with 19 goals while Sullivan is second on the squad with 17.

Goss, Sullivan and freshman midfielder Emily Mulligan (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern) each scored twice in the opening 10 minutes as the Royals (4-2) took control right away. Scranton pushed the lead to 14-1 at halftime as Sullivan had four goals before the break.

Junior attacker Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and junior midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) each had a goal and three assists. Scranton also received a goal apiece from junior attacker Shannon Howe (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), sophomore midfielder Kiersten Carnes (Montgomery, N.Y./Pine Bush), senior attacker Kaela Mahon (Avon-by-the-Sea/Saint Rose), sophomore midfielder Mariah Guy (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) and sophomore attacker Christine Dredger (Glen Head, N.Y./Lady of Mercy).

Freshman attacker Sheila Mulligan (Ardmore, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) had two assists and sophomore attacker Kaitlin Lazorko (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) added one assist.

Junior goalie Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood) improved to 4-2 between the pipes by making a pair of first-half saves. Freshman Emily Towey (Abington, Pa./Abington) came off the bench to make nine saves in the second half.

Misericordia (2-3) was led by freshman Melina Juliana (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley), who had three goals and an assist.

Scranton returns to action Thursday when it hosts King's College at 6:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
